I'll start out easy. Engine Guru's, what's your take on these plugs? They've been in for around 6 months, and 9k miles. The rear cylinder has a good amount of carbon deposits on it, which I'm told to expect?! I didn't ride it hard at all yesterday, just 4 short easy rides, which could account for some of the carbon.  Now the tuffy. 2000 Cyclone with carbon fiber oval intake. I assumed it was the Buell Race intake, and ordered my new filter. It came in, but does not match the filter I took out of it. The new one is a bit thicker (quarter inch or so) and has a lip around the edge of the rubber, and also some foam on the opposite side. Comparison Photo's:    My backing plate:  Do I have some sort of weird aftermarket intake, that just looks like the Buell Race? Or an older version or something? The carbon oval has a Buell sticker on the inside, and the Old air filter has a Harley part number. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! | ||

Why change your filter.Your old one is reusable with a good cleaning & oiling.Napa store has K&N Cleaner & Oil.The new filter will likely work.The lip should not interfere with the fit. Good Luck ps. did you check your plugs after wide open throttle?Making sure to shut engine down before throttling down.This gives a true reading. | ||

What kind of gas mileage are you getting, plugs look awfully rich. As for the carbon build up, I'd route that breather line out of the air cleaner, it's not helping the issue. There's nothing wrong with your old air cleaner if you would service it. The new one might seal ok with the foam removed,but I would be inclined to return it...........Charlie | ||

I'm changing the air filter because I've recently installed a catch can to keep all the crap from blowing back in there, and the old filter has had that oil and other junk spewed on it for years. I've already cleaned it, and it's still looks pretty bad. I'm getting normal gas milage. 35-50 depending on how I ride it. | ||

The new filter is not going to work, ever. Am I really the only one that can see it's a totally different shape than the old one? Think... the old one looks like Bristol, the new one looks like Pocono. Plugs are tough... are they perfect? No. Are they bad? Eh, not really. Gotta go with Dfish on this - it's all going to depend on how the throttle was when you shut down. For instance, if the bike was idling, you're going to get a plug reading for idle only. WOT gives a reading for WOT throttle only. I'd say if anything you're just running a tad rich. | ||

I rode easy for 2 miles, then idled for 30 seconds, then shut off. The shape doesn't bother me, they are slightly different, but the both fit fine on the backing plate. I suspect the new one will change shape a bit after sitting on it's side (under the carbon fiber cover) for 5 years. | ||

I believe you got an XB filter. Sure looks triangular and not oval shaped in the pics. | ||

Why not just get the right filter instead of make the wrong one work. That extra lip won't allow for a good seal, the shape is wrong, and it's too thick. No sense in forcing it. | ||

That is definitely the Buell Race Air Cleaner on your bike. The one we sell now is similar, but has a milled backplate with integral spacer and velocity stack, and a milled step to help hold the filter in the oval shape. The Buell race air cleaner used the somewhat cheesy stamped plate, and I think they all take on that shape that is worn into your back plate since there isn't any feature to hold it oval on the back plate side like the CF cover does on the outside. The K&N filters are the likely same K&N part. The old one MAY be an HD2076, the new one you got is an HD2078, either will work. Both are spec'd from K&N at 3" high and 8.375 long. The 3" "oval" was never an oval, it's always been a bit of a D shape, but it is formable to the oval shape without much doing, and after running that way a bit, it will hold that shape. The foam strip is removable, peel it off. Some come with it, some don't, some come with an extra foam donut, others don't. I have no idea why. Our application uses neither, just throw it away. I find that it works best with the side that says towards the engine AWAY from the engine when used with the CF oval. Al | ||

Hah! Thanks Al! I'll peel the foam off and see where we stand. The extra thickness could easily be solved with a couple of washers behind the bars that the CF bolts too. | ||

I had to do a little customization, but it's on and all is good. I pulled the foam off, then had to cut off that ridge on the back to make it flat on both sides, then shimmed the two metal rods that hold the Oval on with a couple washers, and it bolted up perfectly. All is good. |
