Well, for me personally, I'm just glad that Ross and company aren't going to be near as worried as they were. I have a picture of their Humvee after they went over a road side bomb. Only one of them were hurt, and had to be sent home. While the picture ain't pretty, and it's obvious someone was hurt, I can show you why they're more than happy with the new truck. Sorry y'all couldn't share in their happiness to have new and better equipment. The point of the thread wasn't meant to bash, it was to celebrate the fact that they'll be able to continue in better safety then they were before. |

600-800,000 per truck?? Wow. I wonder how easy they sink in soft terrain. Or what is the angle they can transverse without sliding down or tipping over. Since they weigh ____ tons? Looks like they are good only for road use only. This war is getting costly! Where is my cheap gas Mr. Bush? |

Just a little note, Lots of very clever people can design quite wonderful vehicles for many different defensive & offensive purposes. Doesn't mean they get it right first time every time, constructive criticism isn't nay-saying. I wouldn't have put the air intake there either, but I can only assume there is some sort of filter/divert system under the hood, any sort of hit on the air cleaner is going to be sending shrapnel down to the turbo otherwise (I'm presuming it's a turbo diesel) Case in point on the design error thing. Both the US & the British military spent a whole load of money on painting plant tippers to hide their IR signature. Totally pointless, they all had heated bucks using the exhaust system, Doh! The Germans built one of the best weapons ever, the Tiger Tank, unfortunately they forgot to armour the engine bay, so if you could get behind it, one shot up the arse & it was done. Developement is an ongoing & continuous process. |

"Sorry y'all couldn't share in their happiness to have new and better equipment." It's just the usual suspects saying the usual things in another context. SSDD |

you need to understand that the Hummer was never intended as an armored transport. I don't think a bradley could with stand the attacks that are being thrown at the hummer. So I would Not call it a replacement. It is a different vehicle. BTW one of the new vehicles has been penetrated by the Armour piercing hand grenade. A new twist to the Iraqi's bag of tricks. It is loosely based on the German Panzerfaust. The Russian version can penetrate 150mm of armor. Uses a parachute to get it oriented correctly before impact. Scary to say the least. Look at this video. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=ada_1189106198 |

"any sort of hit on the air cleaner is going to be sending shrapnel down to the turbo otherwise (I'm presuming it's a turbo diesel) " I did a quick read on them in the MarineTimes newspaper. Basic its an over-the-road big rig chassis, engine, and trans. Then about 40tons of metal. So It would almost have to be a turbo. That leaves the air intake and I sure hope not a front mounted intercooler.. A 12year old Iraqi with a 1890's mauser could drop a 1/2 million dollar piece of equipment to be stranded on the side of the road. The troops would be stuck inside of the oven untill the area could be secured. Also the drive axles, steering nuckles and other important items wouldn't be able to stand up to a blast. |
