I just finished a 2400mi trip up to Colorado across a bunch of mountain passes and back home. I'll throw in a ride report shortly, but first I need to order the parts to get my Uly in working order again. Two problems occurred with the Uly on the trip. The first is an easy fix. The push throttle cable frayed under the airbox and jammed up. I found this out when showing off for the camera on Pikes Peak. I gassed it for a dirt corner and the throttle stuck, the resulting in a tank slapper/ almost high side, when I yanked in the clutch. I ended up cutting the cable mess and riding home with just the pull cable. The second issue was the engine cutting out at ~5200RPM when under load in the higher gears with the engine/frame at higher temps. It almost seemed like I was hitting the rev limiter. It only happened when the bike was hot, i.e. several hours of riding, enough to start to get the frame warm. At first it was sporadic, and I thought I had bad fuel or something. By the end of the ride home, it was doing it in most of upper the gears. I hooked up the VDSTS and it shows Trouble Code 15: Air Temperature Sensor Open or Short to Battery. I checked the wiring and don't see any worn wires off of the IAT (Intake Air Temp) Sensor. I'm going to order up a new sensor, which should fix the problem. BTW here is the Uly on top of Engineer Pass, complete with 80# of gear in the bags. (Message edited by paochow on September 03, 2007) |

Hmmm, looks familiar. Did you take the road/trail from Ouray? Silverton? Lake City? I went Ouray to Lake City first time and then went Silverton to Lake City next. Awesome ride, sorry you had problems. Looking forward to your ride report.

We went from Lake City to Silverton. Here is a Google map of the week long route we took. Further testing of IAT sensor showed it is non functional when hot. I heated it with a hair dryer on low and the values went way off from spec. I placed an order with Andy so I should have it fixed soon. (Message edited by paochow on September 03, 2007) |

Paochow, are there any signs of what could have happened to the sensor? Was it covered in a lot of oil? Did you see a break in it? Just curious. |

There was some oil on the top of the air box, and around the sensor, so that is a strong possibility for what happened to it. The oil tubes were at a 3/8" level, so nothing wrong there. Oil level was spot on at halfway up the full mark on the dipstick throughout the entire ride. I'm guessing all of the mountain riding could have gotten some oil to sputter through the breather tubes and ruin it. From what I can tell it doesn't appear to have any breaks, but those wires are very tiny. |

Anybody go over Tin Cup Pass? That one's a doozy. I did it about a month ago. |

Paochow, your route was similar to mine. The trail to Ouray from Engineer Pass is a lot tougher than the one to Silverton. As long as you don't have to wait for Jeeps it's a lot of fun but very rough in places. Rubberdown, I've heard of Tin Cup Pass but don't recolect where it's at or between. I wanted to ride Black Bear pass but it was closed. Are you guys with me? I'm pushing for a dual range transmission, what do you think? Who needs a 6 speed when you can have 10!! |

I asked about a dual range tranny once and got no where. I suspect you and I are in the minority on the two range gear box. |

I've been kicking around a front wheel drive idea but haven't liked the directions my ideas have gone. |

Get a Rokon for two-wheel drive. Anyone else remember that one? |

Tin Cup pass goes from St. Elmo over and down to Taylor Lake. I did it about a month ago. Pretty exciting ride! |

I wass asking the question about if a ULY could make engineers pass. Well here is my answer in full color. I would love to here more about these rides and how the ULY handled the rocky road. P.S. Still waiting to see if the dealer will give me the deal I want so I can buy and 08 Uly. |

A picture is worth a thousand words:
The tall gearing and lack of torque below 3000 rpm at that elevation makes it hard to go slow. If you can keep your speed up it is a lot of fun but get bogged down behind Jeeps etc. and you just have to wait till they pull ahead aways and then catch up. The switchbacks need a lot of clutch slipping but the straights are just plain fun. I was really shocked at some of the places the Uly went. Good luck on the 08 deal! tootal |

I was really shocked at some of the places the Uly went. Very true. I am getting better are running the Uly at just off idle. I do not have to worry about elevation here. Heck K-Town is below sea-level. They are fun in the dirt. That road looks like fun. |

My Beemer was way to tall geared and it was the lower geared adventure version. I rode some pretty nasty roads but I was always scared of dropping the 700lb beast and being stuck. So 425lbs dry sounds a lot better. But if the ULY is higher geared higher then my adventure that may be a challenge for both myself and the clutch. |

I had the same issue as Tootal with gearing, but more on the downhill than uphill. The Uly wanted to go 30mph downhill before engine breaking would kick in. This combined with some ledge dropoffs had me riding like a kid learning how to ride a bicycle. Too slow and dragging my feet- not a pretty sight, but I never did drop the bike. Once on the more manageable stuff I had a lot more fun... I really enjoyed the Uly on this ride. Sadly it will be the last adventure I take on the bike. I've found myself riding more and more dirt lately. While the Uly is an amazing street bike, it is these street biases that hurt it in the dirt. Tall gearing, less suspension travel, 17" front, limited tire choices, poorly shielded wheel bearings, and an awkward standing position, all conspired against the Uly in the dirt. I made the mistake of trying my friend's KTM 950 Adventure for part of the trip and realized I was on the wrong bike. Not nearly as comfortable on the street or as good in the twisties as the mighty Uly, the KTM handled like a real dirt bike on all surfaces never making excuses for wearing a plate. I went home questioning my steed. Several days later, a friend graciously offered me his 950S Adv to take out with my wife on back for some 2up riding. After about 100 miles of highway, we were both convinced this bike could easily fulfill the street riding we required. While out on the ride, I ran into the local KTM dealer, who let me take my wife out for a demo ride on his personal KTM 990 Adv (881mi on the clock). A trip to the local HD dealer the next day for a warrantied replacement seat (4 weeks and still not here?) was such a sour experience that it sealed the deal. I'm picking up my new 990 Adventure on Saturday. Once the parts for the Uly show up, I'm making the necessary repairs and putting it up for sale. I've already sold a bunch of the aftermarket parts and currently have the Race kit up on Ebay, and the bags up in the classifieds. I'm sure I'll miss the Uly, and I always will have fond memories of it. But after 14months and 13,500mi of ownership, I'm ready to try something new. I'll still be poking around this forum. You guys are great. Thanks for all of the help. I'm sure sooner or later, Buell will become an independent dealer, and I'll end up buying a 2011 Uly. |

Paochow, Thanks for the pics, I recognized the road up Pike's Peak. I read your KTM experience on ADV and wondered if you would post it here. I understand it if your more dirt oriented but that seat would just not work for me!! Enjoy the new toy and happy trails. tootal |

KTM's are sweet. If you're gonna play more in the dirt that's the way to go for sure. |
