G'day all, got 3 quick questions.

1) Considering that my bike as drank 3 bottles (3 quarts) of Syn 3 in 5500km (3437 miles)$$$$ Ive decided that a change of oil might be worth a try for the next oil change (this week). I was thinking of going the non-synthetic route. Manual says, oil for Diesel Engines ,CF-4, CG-4 etc. would be ok. Does this mean I should be going to the 'Car' section of the shop and choosing my oil from there? If I buy a 20W50 Diesel oil CF-4 etc, I should be OK?

2) Primary Chain- manual mentions vertical freeplay.I assume this means the total vertical freeplay both up and down from its point of rest. Given the height of the chain, would this mean that the bottom of the chain should be able to be pushed up to the point where the top of the chain is normally at rest and vice versa? (if that makes any sense)

3) Front brake PADS- went to buy some front brake pads from my Buell dealer- he said 17,000 Yen ( U.S.$146.00)- Is this for real. I said 'sorry' no way but now Im having trouble finding an alternative so I might have to go crawling back to him. How much are they in the U.S.?

Never use car oil in your higher revving, hotter running motorcycle. The visconcity is different in motorcycle oil. I run Syn 3 in my bike with no issues at all.

Make sure your primary chain is at its tightest point and adjust from there. When you push up on the primary chain with your finger the bottom of the chain links should be just about even with the top of the inspection window. This is how I do mine and seems to be fine.

A set of brake pads are about $45-$50 US dollars last time I purchased a set. I run OEM pads, but I know some people use aftermarket pads. Maybe you can find a set of aftermarkets cheaper.

I would stick with motorcycle oil.

Sync3 seems to get used up on mine as well when riding hard. Try Amsoil or Mobil 1. Amsoil seems to do a lot better in my bike.

Brake pads cost me $45US last time I changed them. I wonder what shipping be on a set from the US. I t would be worth checking into.

I do my chain the same as beachbuell mentioned. Works fine.

Try the 15w-50 mobil one. lots of guys on here run it with no problem.

I would recommend a high viscosity diesel oil as a good alternative. I run 15W40 Delo or Rotella T in my engine and primary. It'll definitely hold up under the more extreme operating conditions of an aircooled v-twin.

I just ordered a pair of Lyndal Gold pads for American
Sportbike for $55 front. Im sure Al ships anywhere, and even going to Japan would be cheaper than what they are asking.

i just installed the Lyndal gold pads from Americansportbike.com
work just fine. like mentioned $60 shipped (USA)

And 3 quarts!!!!! I think your problem lies some where else than just the brand alone (unless your running some thin oil)

Paul,
Your bike IS probaly drinking oil.
If you are over filling it.

Trust me I know. I thought mine was burning /drinking it and all i was doing was over filling it by a couple onces. It pukes it back out into your airbox/intake when you over fill it.

Here is how you find you proper oil levell.
1. Ride bike 20 mins
2. Drain all oil and replace filter.
3. Fill with exactly 2.5 qts
4. Ride bike 20 mins.
5. Recheck oil.
6. Make note of where your oil level is on your stick.

THIS IS YOUR PORPER OIL LEVEL.

Now from here you can acurately see how much oil your bike consumes if it does any at all.



-I ordered my pads Lyndal Goldsfrom appleton H/D 60 bucks or so. Got em delivered last month to Iwakuni. It took also about 2.5 weeks

I am in Japan as well.

Thanks, Sgthigg, I read your advice on a previous thread and I was planning on doing this on Saturday when I check the oil. Thanks for the tip. Thought i might change brand while im at it cause Syn3 at $25 a bottle is a bit steep especially when she is so thirsty.I might try the Mobil 1 15W50 if i can find it. Im hoping Ive been overfilling it but i doubt it because even when the oil is very low on the stick it still disappears further, plus the airbox seems to be to clean and dry to have had 2 to 3 quarts go through there in 5 months. Your test will tell.

I assume you got your bike "shakkened" alright without any trouble with the emissions etc. Im up for it in December, after which i hope to get a Drummer.

As for brake pads I think ill have to bite the bullet and pay the ransom on them.(300% increase!!!). Im off to see Rossi, Hayden, Stoner and the boys next week in Motegi so i need the Buell in tip top shape, (didnt see a single Buell there last year) anyways hope the rain stops so i can get out there, thanks for the tips.
