Heres the problem with my pipe on my XL883R at 20 mph, its right between first and second gear. 2nd will make it more quiet, but I have a tendency to want to speed a bit in second, and through the speedtrap that 5mph will get me a ticket. The loud back popping reverb that I get at 2900 RPM in first gear with a thunder header echoes off all of the houses. Its loud. Its wake the hell out of bed loud. But I am doing the speed limit, so the Law Enforcement cant pull me over for that one. Want to keep your neighborhood quiet from my pipe? INcrease your speed limit, because I dont want to be in your arterials any more than you want me there. |

That's funny Brian! I don't like ThunderHeaders, but that's just me! The Hooker pipe on my Harley is the same way, not because of the pipe, but because of the rear sprocket I run. 35mph is right between 3rd & 4th. 4th lugs it down, 3rd lets everyone know I'm coming. I like the theory . . .

They may not pull you over for speed, but here in California, they can pull you over for noise.

i like revving the motor at a stop light when there's some jacka$$ with his jungle music blaring right beside you, or better yet if i'm on the ultra, turn up the metallica. those speakers do alright in a small area. |

I had a Supertrapp 2 into 1 on my old 1200 Sportster that added a few ponies and grunt but it wasn't really loud. It was just deep and rumbly. Once, in a mall parking lot, I started it up and as I let the clutch out the rumble and vibrations set off the car alarm next to me. It took me 20 minutes to get out of that parking lot as the security guards wandered around in their pickups trying to figure out whey all the car alarms were going off. |

I'll do that with my D&D once or twice a season. The best part about doing that is you don't even have to give it any throttle, at idle the alarms will go off. |

Was up in Northern Wisconsin over the weekend. We stopped in at a local cabin rental campground owned by a friend of the indirect family ancestry. A couple was there on their motorcycle looking to set up a parking/camping spot for a couple of weekends from now. Time was right around dusk/sunset. Couple was getting ready to head off, guy started up his bike, I've heard drag boats that were quieter, engine echoed thru the trees, very loud even though he kept the revs down, way out of place for a quiet relaxing place.
The day is coming. Just got a copy of HogTails in the mail, they've republished an article on noisy pipes from 2005. The day is coming, soon. |
