My brother just bought a Uly and is going to buy a Zumo to transfer between the Uly and Ultra Classic he rides. He is not so internet savvy and asked me to find out these things for him. I know some of you have it so I have some questions. 1) How do you connect earphones to it? Better yet, what do you connect to it for using the calling feature. He travels a lot on the bikes and would like to be able to use the feature if necessary. 2) To mount it on a 2nd motorcycle will he need another complete mounting kit or will the kit transfer if the power wires are present on both bikes? 3) Is there a recommended retailer with a good price? I found it for roughly $650 at buydig.com and pcnation.com but have no experience with either place? Anyone bought one on Ebay safely? Thanks, Joel |

hink.....there is a very good forum dedicated to the Zumo at http://www.zumoforums.com though I just saw the link is not working this morning. Anyways, the Zumo is Bluetooth capable for the phone feature and music for that matter but the music will be mono. The ear plugs have a jack. Many connect it up to an Autocom or similar device. Yes you will need to buy a second motorcycle mount to switch between bikes. THe Zumo 550 comes with a car mount and a bike mount. Both buydig and pcanation are very good online retailers and they are the best price for the Zumo and the majority of buyers use one of the two. I have purchased many items from pcnation and they are great! Look out for eBay as there is no benefit I could see considering the the prices you can get from the two retailers. Also, Garmin just updated the map data and the newest map data is called version 2008. Make sure whatever you buy has that version loaded. The old version was called ver 8. This year Garmin changed the naming up map updates and instead of going to ver 9 they changed it to 2008. Super gps and a pleasure to use! |

The zumo mounting instructions here will answer some of your questions: http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/1372_InstallationGu ide.pdf That is a RAM mount, you can purchase an extra handlebar base from RAM for the other bike(s) and just move the socket arm, mounting base, and zumo from bike to bike. To do that you'll probably want to buy additional power cords or make up a quick detachable power cord connection on each vehicle instead of hard wiring it in. Page 49 in the Owner's Manual has a matrix that shows and explains the audio options. http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/1369_OwnersManual.p df In short, you have BlueTooth for a phone and the mounts also have 2.5mm and 3.5mm jacks for headphones and headphone/microphone units. And the zumo combines the audio inputs and mutes the mp3/XM music for turning prompts and incoming calls. In short, I don't think there are any issues with the zumo 550 as far as getting the audio in and out and hearing the most logical audio source at the most logical time. Jack |

I just bought mine from PC Nation and it was loaded with the new City Navigator. I ended up going with a Touratech Mount. Spendy, but more secure in that you don't have to mess with the security screw and it has some dampening built in. To use the mount on multiple bikes, I second the quick detach power connector idea. The Garmin cord takes a bit of work to remove, and has two screws to make sure it doesn't work loose. You could forgo the screws on the cable, but it could possibly vibe out. Here is a pic of the TT mount. I need a security screw on the RAM bar, but the one TT sold me was too short.

Does the Zumo have a standard stereo jack for regular earbud type headphones or does it have to use bluetooth? |

"the mounts also have 2.5mm and 3.5mm jacks for headphones and headphone/microphone units."-from jackbequick's post so it is in the bike mount not the unit unless you get a stereo bluetooth set maybe. (Message edited by miamiuly on August 22, 2007) |

Miamiuly has it right. The zumo has a wide multipin connector that snaps into a matching socket on the mount. All the other input/output ports and jacks (power, XM radio, and the two audio jacks) are on the mount itself and get into and out of the zumo via that multipin connector. When you pop the zumo out of the mount, you have a handheld GPS receiver with about four hours of battery duration from the self-contained battery. And there is a weatherproofing cap to cover the socket on the mount when the zumo is removed. So, I think, but am not certain, that the Bluetooth phone goes away when the zumo is out of the mount. And of course you've left your XM receiver and audio jacks behind too. Jack |

So the bluetooth is mono? So no wireless mp3s? |

Fwiw's link above is for the zumo 450, Amazon wants $688.55 for the zumo 550. Similar prices can be found on eBay too. Garmin has a minisite with a lot of eye candy/info on the zumo line: http://www8.garmin.com/zumo/minisite.html For the "just the facts" types, this page is more to the meat of the matter: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=135 You can check the 450 and 550 boxes there (the 400 is not available yet, the 500 is the European version) and compare the features. The main differences are that the 450 is not Bluetooth capable, will not use the XM receiver, and will not speak the names of streets (but the 450 will give audible turning prompts without saying the street names). Don;'t forget, the price of the zumo 550 does *not* include the optional at extra cost GXM-30 XM radio receiver. That has a MSRP of $267.84, I don't know what street prices are like on those. And all the whizz bang XM services (weather, traffic, and radio) require subscriptions, you can study the details on that here: http://www8.garmin.com/xm/ If anyone is not a little big confused or intimidated by Garmin's myriad offerings and profusion of features, they may not be paying attention. :>) Jack |

Just thinking out loud here but has anyone tried to use the antenna that comes with the basic XM or Sirius unit? I don't know if the plugin on the Zumo would allow it but it would be a smaller and cheaper option if it did. |

Stew that will not work....the antenna required for the Zumo is actually a receiver as well and is not just the simple antenna piece that plugs into the basic car unit. It's all about XM/Sirus making money and figuring out technology so you and I can't come up with cheap work arounds. |
