OK I love the S1 BUT did the designer ever think about an easier way to replace the belt. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH After creatively blocking and strapping the enging to the floor of the garage. I actually used a piece of 5/8 inch steel plate that measured approx 3 feet by 2 feet, welded two eye hooks on either side then put it under the bike, removed the exhaust system, blocked up beneath the engine with a bike jack on the left side and an automotive scissors jack on the other then took two crating straps and secured all to the steel plate. Damm piece of steel weighed almost 100lbs but kept the bike upright. All other parts were then removed as per the service manual and advice offered from Buellistic and Spidey. Voila - the frame is now lifting from the motor and I am waiting on a belt - should be here later today. Visual inspection of the isolators and they appear to be alright - no wear or tearing. The more I take the bike apart the more I understand its design. Someone correct me if I am wrong but the isolators keep the motor from banging off the frame in a sideways motion. Oh well its really not as bad as I made it sound but I wish there would have been some kind of removable service plate on the right side of the frame for this kind of work. New belt will definately be loose. |

Some tube frames have a removable side plate. When I got my 2000 M2 I was also looking at a slightly older one and that removable side plate was exactly why I was looking at the demo bike instead of the new bike. I wish they would have kept it as it would make the very occaisional road-side repair so much easier. Post pics of your process if you can. |

I believe the 95-96 S2, 96 S1 and 99-02 X1 are the ones that have the removable side plates. |

It was either the 99 or 98 M2 that also had the sideplate, at least one I was looking at did. Hmmm, could it have been an S1 with a wide tank? I was new to Buells then, but I'm pretty sure it was a pre-2000 M2. |

the pre 99 M2 didn't have the crossover pipes. I could be wrong on the models, but that's how I remember them. |

Newfie_buell: There was an easier way than the way you did it... BUT, the main thing is that you improvised and did it... Now check out AMERICANTHUNDRBIKE.ORG under Isolators... In buelling LaFayette |

Damm, Now I got to put everything back together and take it apart the easier way. Actually the hardest part of the whole thing was the fact that I did not own a bike lift. I had to improvise on that part but everything else was as per the service manual. That manual is worth its weight in gold. Thanks again Buellistic and Tony (aka Spidey) |

My M2 had 18,000 miles and was going strong on it's original belt. My son replaced his twice in 16,000 miles. I saw a nice little S1 with a broken belt being pushed by a guy in full lethers, about a block from Downtown HD near Seattle today. The poor guy didn't look happy. He's going to be even less happy when the service guy tells him they could get to it in about two, maybe three weeks and it's going to cost $300. |

Ray, I got to say the Buell Retailers and even the HD Retailers around here (Canada) are great. My belt broke on Monday Night, I called the Buell Retailer where I bought the bike in another Province and they did not have it in stock. I got the part number from them as well Buellistic in Lafayette gave me a part number and I decided to use my local HD retailer here on the Island. I ordered the belt on Tuesday Morning and the belt was here in Newfoundland this morning before 10:00am. The funny thing is every time I have ordered parts I always have had them in 24hrs if I needed them real fast (air freight) or about 5 days ground freight. I find the Retailer Network here in Canada fantastic especially if you have part numbers to provide them with. The belt cost me $306.00 Canadian and about 5 hrs of my time. I followed the service manual and with some e-mail help from the boys the job is mostly done. I decided to polish the exhaust system seeing its off. |

Bike is complete I tried the 55t pulley on it and really did not like it so went back to the stock one. There is also not enough adjustment with the 55t pulley as your at the end of the swingarm adjustment. The Stock pulley is more fun!!!!!!! Thanks again for all the advice. Bill |

So with the 55t rear sprocket you were unable to adequately set the belt tension? LOL! LaFayette, you are one loyal Harley fan. Got a tattoo? |

With the stock S1 front sprocket (I can't remember how many teeth it is) and the 55t rear sprocket I could not get adequate belt tension. It was far too loose, I rode it for about 10km to see how everything was and did not like it. The accleeration was different. The belt that my bike came with was 128t belt. If you want to use the stock front sprocket and the 55t rear you would have to get the 125t belt. This was a great learning experience and I have gained an appreciation for the engineering of the bike. Especially the Rear Isolators - Who'd ever thought they would work so good. |

Blake $ Newfibuell: If you run a 30T you get a "GEAR RATIO" within TENTHs of the 27/55... Remember the "KISS" $ "KICS" PROGRAMS... You do not have to buy sprockets & belt... ie: 30/61... In buelling LaFayette |

Good advice. I'm just surprised that a 55t rear sprocket would run the rear axle to the edge of its adjustable limit. I've got plenty of room, or so I thought, on my '97 Cyclone to swap to a 55t rear while leaving the stock 27t front sprocket. The other problem with the 27/55 combination though is the belt rubbing the swingarm block. I may try a 29t front sprocket. That would get me from turn 7 to turn 8 without having to upshift into 3rd and then downshift back down to 2nd in the middle of turn 8. |

I never really took a good look at the busted belt until today and I discovered that it appears to be dry-rotted. Is this possible????????? I will explain what I mean then someone can tell me if its dry-rot. A real close inspection revealed at least 6 cracks across the belt in various places on the belt. The cracks were very small 1/8 inch to a couple almost right across the belt and the cracks were to the underlying fibres. The under side (teeth side) of the belt has cracking on it as well - especially between the teeth but not to the fibres. Anyone have this happen - only wish I still had a macro lens for my camera. If I can get a pic I will post. |

I'm on my 3rd (yes, 3rd) belt at 7,000 miles on my XB9R. 3,500 each for the first two (replaced under warranty). That probably averages out to about 500 wheelies per belt, so I can't complain... |

Is it the wheelies that broke it???? I just saw my first blast up close yesterday and noticed the belt is very narrow. Is that normal.

part number 40022-91 is a Harley number it is still active thru the H-D dealer network. 100's of dealers in 45 states have them at this current time and that is only the dealers on H-D's Talon system so that leaves out the hundred or so that use Light Speed or another system. SOOOOO If Harley does stop supplying them I am all set. IF they do run out or is never available I will switch to chain |

Blake, stock S-2 gearing is 29/61.Works real well.Last year at Aaron's I put the 27/55 combo on my S-2 and we had to make some axle adjuster spacers as the stockers did not have enough room to adjust belt. The shoulder on the bolt portion bottomed out before belt was tight enough. |

I read you. I didn't consider the adjuster bolt running out of threads, just how much room the axle had to move aft. Thanks for the education on that. |
