Alright, so here's the story, I screwed up and installed an aftermarket battery with reversed leads. I think that is the cause of this problem. I replaced the battery and the key switch fuse is continuously blowing right when the bike is turned to the on position. I thought it was the ignition coil, I pulled that and tested it, it did show abnormally high resistance. I replaced that and put everything back together, thinking the problem was solved. Nope, still blowing fuses every time the bike is turned to "on". Anyone have any thoughts on this problem?? My bike has been down for a bit and it's killing me! Thanks!

A battery with reversed leads should not be a problem as long as the positive cable/wires connect to the positive terminal and vice versa the negative cable.

On the other hand you have changed the bike's configuration wrt routing of battery cables and wires to the battery terminals. So you have to be very careful to assess where you put these newly routed cables/wires keeping in mind that they may be stretched and/or touching grounded frame parts or brackets and such that were not touching before you changed the battery.

Another thing to consider is does the seat touch the battery terminals or cables especially when you sit on it? It may have done this with the original battery but if the negative terminal was contacted, nothing usually would happen. The new battery with terminals reversed might short out if the seat touches the + cable/terminal. (That could be fodder for a "redneck heated seat" joke. Ooh, sorry, that was just too obvious.)

OK, I'll be more clear:

I screwed up and installed the battery in reverse (pos to neg, neg to pos). What did I fry?

Sorry, I misunderstood.

I don't know how fault tolerant the ECM is but that would be my first guess. If you can get to the ECM, try removing it and see if the key switch fuse still blows. If it doesn't, that's probably the culprit.

If it does, next guess is each of the three relays in the relay center have arc supression diodes. Perhaps the Key relay diode shorted rather than burned out or open-circuited? To test for this, pull out the key relay and measure resistance across the coil terminals. It should not be zero ohms nor infinity; I don't know the nominal value offhand but I think it is in the service manual.

If the relay appears OK, leave it out and see if the key switch fuse blows when you turn the key on.

Wiegs, any followup on this problem?

Sparky, and all who are having the same problem; here is what happened to me. Hopefully this will answer this post.

Came home from overseas (6 day trip) and no dash lights came on when turned to the on position, and it definetly wouldn't start (05 XB9SX). Tried to jump it from a running car (which I've learned is a no no), while it was dark. Stupid car had a black protector over the positive terminal on the battery, so I tried to jump my bike with the cables backwards. Interesting thing was that everytime I switched the bike to the on position, the fan came on... Not sure if this is some kind of protective thing. I then decided to take my battery home and charge it on a trickle charger. Did so, and took the battery back to the bike. Still nothing, so I broke out my voltmeter, tested, and it was at 12.4. So I started looking at fuses, and found that my 15 amp "Key Switch" fuse was blown. I replaced it, and it blew as soon as I turned the bike to the on position. So I had the bike towed home (Thank you Gieco Road Side Assist) and did some research. I then removed the key switch electric relay (located in the fuse box- there are three of them), put another 15 amp fuse in, reconnected the battery, and turned the bike to the on position, and viola! My lights came back on and the fuse didnt blow! So, I am guessing that all I need to do is replacee the electric relay ($5-$10), and I should be back in the saddle again. I will repost tomorrow, if the dealership has the relay in stock. Hope this post helps someone else.

I also sent Weiegs a msg, but I have not gotten a response. It would be great to know if this is the same fix he used...

***********UPDATE*************

I bought the key switch relay (part number 31522-00C) and bike started up like a champ. Can't wait to ride it to work tomorrow.
