This thing is driving me ape$&!#. I can't seem to get the jetting right - anyone who can help, I appreciate it. Of course, as soon as I put in the 48 slow jet today I'm sure it'll fix everything...

95 S2 with thunderstorm top end, Buell Race ignition, stock header, supertrapp with 12 discs no endcap, stock intake and carb.

Current setup is 45 slow, 2.5 turns out, 190 main. Riding at very light throttle (i.e. cruising in town in traffic at 30mph) it will stutter on me. Riding in the rain the other night it was stuttering really bad and sneezed on me a couple times. Idle is rock solid so I don't think intake leak - it's all less than 500 miles old, but I'm also going to try the spray test to be safe. Plugs read a light gray after riding to work with (I think too lean) 42 slow jet in it. Tried it today, just to see.

My S1W runs awesome with the 45/190 setup, race air cleaner and ignition, stock header and 'un-stuffed' SS2R, so that's why I tried it on the S2.

Think the 48 will fix me? <sigh> It's the little things...

It almost sounds like the spark plug wires are arcing against something. Have you checked them?

They look good and are clear of any metal, but I guess with unknown miles on them (bought the bike with 17,xxx on it and haven't changed wires) they're a cheap enough "what-if". If that wasn't it...well, then I have a spare set for the saddlebag, LOL. Thanks for the obvious thought...I'm clearly over-thinking this whole thing. Grr.

Joe
It does sound like the area of interest is the slow circuit.

What if any mods have been done to the carb.? If the spring is too short(cut-off) or the slide drilled too large, could give you this response. Does the diaphragm test OK?........Charlie

It seems happiest at the moment with a 48/185. I haven't disassembled yet to check the spring or diaphragm. I suspect it's just jetting as it ran clean and smooth when it was a stock S2 motor. The stutter came along after the Thunderstorm upgrade.

I'm withholding final judgement until a day (hopefully soon) when the temp is below 102 and the humidity drops below 98%. I'm sure that has more than a little bit to do with it, LOL.

Joe,
You may just need a spacer under the needle. That often takes care of off idle problems. The 48 is probably going to give you problems with your plugs if you do much idling around(especially in this heat), good luck...........Charlie

I have to admit the 48 was too fat. Rode to Hagerstown yesterday to do some work with the 48 and it was sluggish and a little to fat around town, and it flat out refused to idle above 600. Did the work I needed to do, went out in an Armageddon thunderstorm to change the jet back to the 45 (for a 45/185 combo) and rode home in moderate rain, no issues. Today coming to work it feels like it flattens out a bit at 4500 or more...but I also just hit reserve so it may have been low fuel. I'm going to run this tank with the 185 and see how it behaves. It's also under 105 temp for a change so I'm sure that helped, LOL.
