Just a quick post with photos. Before: 2006 Uly, stock airbox, stock filter, stock crank-case breather route (into airbox), Special OPS pipe. After: Stock airbox cut, only top used to hold down a K&N air filter. Secured using threaded rod through the stock breather hose holes. Breather hoses joined to T-peice, long/thin hose running to a generic fuel filter acting as a catch can/filter. Thoughts after ~200km (in order of importance to me, haha): * Intake sound is AWESOME! * Noticeable power increase (can consistently pull clutch'less wheelies in 2nd gear now, previously needed clutch... that's how I measure real-world success of performance mods). * Easier access to air filter (to check after riding in dusty conditions, etc). * Now able to check crank case blow-by gases/splodge, makes me feel better knowing the hydraulic lifters are doing their job, etc. * Idle is low now, ~900->1000rpm. Post-mod: * Will do a TPS to restore idle. * Later will install TFI (which I have removed temporarily) and add some fuel. Full size photos with some descriptive captions here: http://picasaweb.google.com/james.laugesen/2007080 4BuellyOpenAirBoxMod PS - I've pimped this same post on advrider, assuie buell riders, and badweb, hah. |

You can get some plastic spacers that are intended to go over the nails that attach gutters to houses at your local hardware store for a few pennies. Those can be cut down to correct length to stop the cover from crushing down too much on the filter and allow you to tighten the wing-nuts so that the vibes don't loosen them. I did almost exactly the same mod on my bike using an 04 12 airbox cover, except I used a Norris Performance (guy that makes the American Sport Bike, or Drummer) catch can. I could not be more thrilled after draining the catch can a few times. Knowing that goo did not and will not go into my intake tract is wonderful. The sound and performance are even better. Great pics. Good job. BTW while I had the base of the airbox off of the bike I covered it in aluminum tape to reflect motor heat back down and out of the airbox. I don't know if there was any gain, but black absorbs and radiates heat better than any other color...just a thought. (Message edited by diablobrian on August 06, 2007) |
