anybody got video or a real good discription of how the shift light/tach needle works or looks |

There is a video in the "Need help hosting videos" post. I believe it is the second video. It shows that bike running and the tach needle lighting up. Be sure to right click on it and download the target/object as you need to have this on your hard drive to get it to work properly. Maybe anony can chime on this, but it looked like the tach light kicked on in the mid-rev range. The video didn't show anything close to redline, soooo does it get progressively brighter all the way up to redline? As it stands right now, this seems like a cool, novel idea--but you know how novelty wears off eventually and it just becomes annoying. If this is truly supposed to be a shift light of sorts, wouldn't it be better to have it only illuminate maybe at 9,500 RPM? |

when i watched it at laguna seca it looked as though the needle started to light up around 5 or 6 maybe? |

Paintball--Yeah it seems like it lights up right in the middle of the RPM range--and it gets pretty bright. Did you see it climb to redline? All my info is from a sketchy video that is really intended to hear the bike run. |

yeah, i actually took those videos i saw him tach it out a couple times very briefly and it apeared from the angle i was at that it did get brighter but i cant say for sure. |

It's a SHIFT light, not a redline indicator, is my understanding. It is time to shift at a much lower RPM when you are cruising or at a small throttle opening and light load, as opposed to WOT and really running her hard. Therefore, if it is a REAL trick setup, it will flash at much lower RPM while sitting in nuetral revving it up, as opposed to running her flat out through the gears, when it should light up much closer to redline. I haven't ridden it or talked to a Buell engineer about this, but that's my take on it. Anony? |

Bigblock, that is an interesting take on it. I had not heard that before. Is that what other sportbikes do? From the video, they were reving to about 7-8k with the tach lighting at 5-6K, now there was no load obviously. He was opening the throttle as we all would when trying to "show off" the bike (ie quickly). Not sure that I would like the varying shift light as Bigblock describes. Personally, I would like it consistently up around 9,500. ANony where are youuuuuuuu? |

Hmmm, interesting idea! The shift light turns on when it's the best time to shift for the current throttle position. The more throttle your giving it, the higher the RPM for the shift light. WOT means shift light at red line. That's interesting, but I don't think I would like it. I'll shift when I want, I'd just like a shift light as a warning, not a suggestion. |

I think the idea of a dynamic shift light is awesome. Not sure if this is the case, but here's a screenshot of Tom's video. Some of the spectators obviously got a kick out of it once they had noticed it.

BUELLers: Next to what is called a PASSING LAMP SWITCH which should be on the 1125R, is the SHIFT LIGHT ... These two items are the best SAFETY items on a motorcycle ... Of course how may riders really know how to use the PASSING LAMP SWITCH ??? This item has saved my arse many a times on my 97S3T and 00 P3 !!! Likewise the SHIFT LIGHT ??? Have one on my 97S3T and two on the P3(one built into the TACH. and one external) ... In BLASTing LaFayette |

Shift lights are programmable, which means you select the rpm where you want the light to flash. The factory default is probably 6,000 rpm (my WAG) for the engine break-in period. After that, you read the owners manual and learn to push the buttons to reset the shift light to whatever rpm you desire. |
