I took my 9SX in to the dealer for the first service at 1500km or 1000miles as recommended by the manual. But the manual also says that the next oil change is not till 8000km or 5000miles, that seams a little long before an oil change. I'm at 4000km right now. When does everyone usually change their oil and what brands do you use? Thanks everyone.

Don't worry, ride happy. If it makes YOU feel better, change it at 6k km along with the filter. Many riders prefer synthetic oil, so use it if you like.

I find a convenient way to remember when to change the oil is to just do it when I change tires. With sport tires, that's about 3000 miles or twice a year.

Your mileage may vary .

If you do it yourself, it only costs a few dollars, and probably takes less time than driving it to the dealers.

I do my oil change every 2500 miles, its cheap ins to me. I also change the primary every 5000, hell its only a quart.

I either ride my bike is Boston traffic to and from work or on some nasty twisty roads on the weekend. So either way its seeing some abuse.

"I find a convenient way to remember when to change the oil is to just do it when I change tires."

Ha! That's what I do. When I tell non riders this, they are stunned that MC tires are so consumable.

I use Mobil 1 15w50 full syn and Purolator PureOne filters. I change mine at 5k and the oil still looks clean, I know I could go longer without any problems.

I just did my first oil change on my new 12R last night with 700 miles on her. Hadn't burned any, but the oil had turned to "dirty" already and had a quite a lot of metal bits on the drain plug magnet. I'm going to cut apart the filter tonight to see how much it caught. I used HD 20/50 dino for this change and intend to go to Mobil 1 15w50 full syn for the next change.
I been trying not to ride her hard during break in, haven't been above 5000 rpm yet, and it's usually 80 to 110 degrees, so the oil turning this early was a bit of a surprise.

How long is the Mobile 1 lasting before it changes color for those of you using it?

I made my first change with some 150 mi or so, and the oil was already DARK }brown, with some metal on the plug...

2nd change with 900 mi (=1000mi service) still on dino oil, next oil change after some 1000-2000mi (maybe switch to synthetic)..

I change mine every 1,000 miles along with the primary and filter using Delo 15W40. Better safe than sorry. After just 1,000 miles, the oil is full of carbon and other combustion refuse. Don't our engines run about 330 degrees Fahrenheit? Seems to me that would break down the lubricant additives pretty quickly. That's why I run a high grade diesel oil.
