Need new tires on my X1 with cast 5in rear wheels. The local cycle gear has has D208's for 149 (pair), the only available set if a standard front and 180 rear. How will a 180 rear make it handle.

I know it will be slower to turn in, but how will it handle.

I bought this bike for the good handling (and low low price), not to cruise around.

Will these tires up the handling?

the 180 on the back of a buell is no problem, it is standard on the PM option wheels (5.50"), however the 180 on the cast wheels (5.00") will change the tires shape such that it may handle in a less than desirable fashion. that being said, many people have done just what you are suggesting and had no problems. i personally would not do it.

I ran a 180 207 on my 5" cast wheel one time and wasn't real happy with the way the profile was compromised, but it didn't make a huge difference in the turn in handling compared to the worn out 170 it replaced. If you don't mind the larger chicken strips (you really shouldn't) go ahead and run them, but be aware the contact patch will be compromised at full lean.

I won't blame the rear tire, but I did lowside and highside with that 180. I just feel better with the 170.

I run a 180 on my 99X1... I have had NO problems at all...

I DONT ride it on a track...but I am known to PUSH it HARD in the back road twisties.

Mine is DUE up for replacement now.. and will be going BACK with a D208 in 180.

I can still get a knee down no prob with a 180... hell, even dragged peg with a 190...

I stick with 180 now though... more common, eaier to find..

Thanks for the advice, I ended up buying pilot powers in a 170 rear, Came to 260 mounted with road hazard warranty. They must not have charged me for mounting.

Hi.
Best thing when it comes to handling and hard cornering is a 160 rear,IMO.
