I will be changing the oil in my forks this weekend. Do people flush them with clean oil before filling them, or just pump out the old oil & put new oil in? | ||

Brucen, I just did it this past weekend and it was suprising easier then I thought it would be. I took the forks off, unscrewed the tops, poured out the oil (measured how much came out), and then poured back in the exact same amount of fresh oil that came out. Reinstalled the forks and went for a ride. Feels much better now! | ||

I did mine last weekend...15000 miles, I waited until it was time to change the front tire and did it all at once using the method in Tpoppa's link. Took me about 5 hours for everything, tire and all. I used a regular suction gun with clear hose extension to set the oil level. Measured the required depth and marked it on the hose; poured in a little extra oil and sucked out the remainder. Then checked it with a dial caliper depth gauge. Don't know why I dreaded the fork oil change so much. On the other hand, don't know why I worried about it; the old oil looked new, and I can't tell a bit of difference in the front end feel. The new tire, now that made a difference. Good luck. | ||

Another helpful tip is to use the squirt nozzle off of a windex bottle (others will work also). When filling the forks with the new oil, use a rubber band to attach the nozzle to a pencil, now you can adjust how far from the top you get the oil. Just pour in the oil, and "squirt" the excess oil out. Very easy. | ||

Any thoughts on where to place a magnet to collect the tiny metal particles? We used to use a rare earth magnet at work that would suspend a person by their tool belt! I was thinking about placing little versions of these on the forks. | ||

How about -- Mighty Vac the old fluid out with fork caps off. Remember to lift the front wheel first. Then remove the caps. Of course pump the forks a couple of time. Won't get it all though. | ||

Are you guys replacing the seals as well or just the oil? How long on the seals or do just wait until they start showing sign of weeping? | ||

I just replaced the oil. I'll wait for the seals to start leaking before replacing them. | ||
