Had a low side on the right through... essentially a 6" stream yesterday. Bike fired right up afterward, I rode on with no problems for about 5 miles. Thereafter, some sudden power surges and cutoff. Fired her back up, rode about a mile in 3rd, same problem. Coax life back into her, cover a good 10-12 mi in 2nd gear without any serious problems, try to give a little throttle, cutoff again. Similiar to hitting killswitch, quick, but not instant tach fall. Couple Harley guys that saw me on the road say ignition coil may have gotten wet-- but it's on the left. I pull it anyway, let it sit overnight. Fire up the bike today, idles fine, if a little low but if I juice it at all, it dies almost immediately. I don't know how to check specific error codes but the "check engine" light DOES come back on after the initial 4sec-on,4sec-off startup sequence and stays on afterward. A little help diagnosing this problem please? If it happens to be the bank angle sensor (noticed that a lot in the archives) could someone tell me where to find it on a lightning? I only have a Firebolt service manual in pdf format. Thanks guys |

Reading the error codes should be the same as with a Firebolt, except locating the data port connector, a squarish looking thing with a rubber end cap, is different. I think it is under the seat. Here's a BadWeB link to more info on the jumper wire and a list of error codes. |

Made the diagnostic tool [thanks Sparky] (for any that wonder, part number 72191-94 is a female socket, single port, about $.60 @ the dealership, probably less at say, walmart) and ran my check engine diagnostics. My computer turned up errors 11 (throttle position) and 13 (O2 sensor). Gave a ring to my local h-d shop, they say they can check my tps but can't replace it. Gave a ring to Cowboy HD in Austin, they say I may have just wet some wires down near my sensor, if worse, I'll need to bring it in. So perhaps someone could tell me what I can do BEFORE I have to resort to coaxing the bike into ANY service department? thanks much ahead of time |

oh also, my symptoms have changed. The engine light no longer reads "current error", rather it reads "no error" when you first cut on the switch, however, the bike will not idle longer than 5-10 seconds unless you give it some throttle. I read in the manual that the sensors can only be detected under 3000rpms so, given these new symptoms, has some other problem already been resolved by just letting the bike sit? If so, what might that have been? ~Dunte |

A wise man once said {as I read on the BadWeB}, "Spend your money wisely at the dealer. Buy the service manual." Your problems just may be from the water getting into various sensor connections. If the ECU is under the seat, it would probably be a good idea to remove it and inspect the contacts on its connectors. Hopefully it's something simple like that. A more difficult proposition could be water getting into the wire harness. If there are any wire insulation problems in that area, that could account for any number of seemingly unrelated intermittent problems. The more you can inspect and resolve those kinds of things, the less you'll wind up spending at the dealer's service department. And having the FSM makes it relatively easy to take apart and put things back together confidently. |

Well Sparky, appreciate the contributions. The characteristically warm and dry Texas weather has baked my bike out quite nicely (and it only helped I went back and "wiggled" some connections into their proper places). Fired up my lightning a few hours after my last set of posts and -WELL- everything ran fine. Idled normal, took a bit of throttle, dropped back ok. Appreciate the direction ... and btw, I have a firebolt FSM, it's saved me many a trip to the service dept. All is well again! And just in time for my ride tomorrow... . thanks much. |

So water or moisture could be causing my problem?!? Flarg! I live in flipping Pacific Northwest, we get more rain than I drink in coffee (which is alot) I hate to think that this bike cant run in the rain. I can cut down on my number of creek fjordings though... dont want to, but I will try |
