This may not be the place for this- if not lemme know and I'll delete and re-post as necessary :: grin :: Just ran into a minor problem with my 'Bolt- the race muffler is rusting all to hell at 10 months after install. No worries, that sort of thing can happen with mass-produced coated products. So I call the local dealer to see about a warranty claim, as I consider a coating failure resulting in rust as a materials defect. He tells me that sure, that sort of thing should be covered, since any accessories I bought with the bike are included in my factory warranty. Good stuff- so I give him the VIN, he looks up the warranty info and discovers that there are NO accessories are listed with my warranty. Still no problem- paperwork mistake, happens to the best of us. He suggests I call the dealer I got the bike from and see if they can add the parts, since they'll have a record of the purchase showing that I did in fact roll the race kit into my bike loan. So I call them, get the salesman I worked with on the phone, and get told that they intentionally did not include the race kit, because installing it would have voided my factory warranty. Now we have a problem. I specifically asked when I bought the bike if the race kit would affect the warranty, and was assured it did not. Now they are saying it voided my warranty all together- but only the factory 2 year warranty- The salesman claims that the race kit does NOT affect my extended warranty (in response to my commenting that if the race kit voided my warranty then I was going to want a full refund for the extended before it went into effect, if it was void before I ever used it) Since this dealership has a fairly bad reputation with a lot of the people I've spoken to, I have a sneaking suspicion that they are trying to cover their butts about a paperwork oversight I'm not even mad about. I'd think that it would not be a huge thing to add the parts to the warranty after the fact if they should be covered, and they have black and white proof in hand. My question is: Does the race kit void the warranty or not? If not, is there some problem with adding the race kit to the warranty after the fact? I am probably going to have to haul my rear down there to talk to the sales manager in person some time next week (it's over 100 miles one way, so some scheduling is required to pop down there) so arming myself with some solid information would probably be in my best interest. If all else fails, I can sand the thing down and krylon it flat black... but I am trying to avoid that if I can :: grin :: Thanks! Merlyn |

Merlyn: I'd suggest you call Buell Customer Service at 1-414-343-8400. I don't think you have a problem, the dealer may. I **think* (subject to this having changed) that all factory parts bought from and installed by an authorized Buell dealer fall under the warranty. My bet is that the folks at Customer Service will have you fixed up pronto. Let me know if you have any problems reaching them and how this turns out. Ride safe, lean much and smile more, Court |

Just thought I'd finally get around to posting an update on this one- I should have done so a while back, but moving eats an amazing amount of free time :: chuckle :: I did call Buell Customer Service, and they assured me that my warranty was fine, but the race kit was not covered under warranty because it is an "Off road use only" set of parts. The gentleman I spoke to was incredibly helpful, and flat out said that if he had one in stock that he'd replace mine anyway, and the warranty be damned- only since the race can was discontinued over a year ago he simply didn't have any on hand to replace it with. No real worries- a flat black race can has it's own hooliganish charm- so that's the way I am going. All in all, I was extremely pleased by the call, even though they couldn't really do anything for me- the C/S guy was great, and the whole conversation left me with a serious warm and fuzzy feeling about Buell as a company. Thanks for the advice and information, Court! Merlyn |
