I have a 99 X-1 that i cannot start. The starter cranks and the lights and signals work ,but the I am getting no spark. I have the Techno Research software and cable from American Sport Bike and I am getting no connection to the ECM. I have the Keyspan adapter for my lap top. It connects just fine to my 2004 XB9SL just not to my 1999 X-1. Where to begin? Is the ECM bad? By the way I swapped ignition coils and I get no spark on either. I say again "Is the ECM BAD?" The local Buffalo/Niagara Falls dealership is clueless. I have 10.5 VDC on connector B (gray wire) but nothing on A or C when I am trying to start the bike. Ok heres an update. The engine light does not go on after the initial 3 second fuel pump cycle, leading me to believe that there is no true trouble code issue. However, when I short out the data port pins 1 and 2,I'm getting trouble codes 15, 33 and 44 by shorting out the data port. Still no connection to my laptop via direct link. I do not see the intake temp sensor, the fuel pump and the bank angle sensor going bad simultaniously. Seeing as to the bike ran fine before the winter and now that I have had a chance to work on it 3 things went bad. My gut is telling me that I am in need of a new ECM. I doubt that the ECM would just up and die because you changed coils. Before you spring for a new ECM, consider that the 99 fuel injected bikes were notorious for having wire harness problems. For example, breaks in wires where the insulation looked fine were common as well as wires pulled from their contacts in connectors, miswires, etc. Going by what you said, I submit that since the bike worked OK before you worked on it, you probably caused some kind of wiring issue that needs to be found and fixed. I'm not being mean here, as it's fairly common that when a bike has problems after having work done, the problem is related to what the mechanic did last. So, if you know what parts of the wire harness you might have touched, moved or connected and disconnected, that's where I would start looking. What components are connected by the connector you mentioned? Do you have a service manual? | ||

Yes I have a service manual but no recommended breakout box. The bike worked before winter and I have finally had a chance to ride it only to have it crank but not start, so I started working on it. Like I said, I am getting NO connectivity to the ECM via directlink; when i turn on the ignition switch I get no check engine light hence leading me to believe no current trouble codes; when I short out pins 1 and 2 of the data link connector it spills out codes 15,33 and 44. Could these be old trouble codes stored in the ECM since without shorting it out I get no current TCs? Will a ECM still spit out trouble codes if it goes bad in some fashion, or could only part of the ECM be bad? |
