So I decided to go out for a spin today on the Uly. It was a nice ride and I was on my home. For some reason I decided to vear off of the nicely paved and mildly twisty road I normally take and try to snake my way back on the gravel roads that litter this part of Northern Virginia. So I'm cruising along trying to reckon my way back and what do I run in to? Another guy on a Uly - but broken down. The Uly's must have some sort of homing signal or something because what are the odds of running in to this guy in the middle of nowhere? His engine just stopped completely while going up a hill. He had no power to the dash or fuel pump but did have power to the lights and blinkers. He had just had the lean angle sensor recall done but we didn't know where that was on the bike. Our theory was that a connector to the dash came loose but apparently the factory tool kit doesn't even include a hex wrench to remove the fairing pieces (WTF?). So I gave him a ride up to the nearest major road to wait for his buddy to come get him (also a Uly rider apparently). Perhaps either the guy that broke down or his buddy are members and will post with the final problem... Anyway, thought I'd pass along this impromptu meeting of the Uly brotherhood near Unison, VA. I'm off to add a hex wrench that fits the fairing screws to my Uly tool kit. |

Always carry a spare relay. They are about $5 from the local Buell-ship. In a pinch you can remove the accessory relay and use it for the essentials, or donate it to a another Bueller without. NUTS |

Both our kits had a hex wrench, but it's not the right size to remove the fly screen (I thought they were all the same but should double check). |

Homer, Wasn't that amazing that you ran into Craig out on that back road! I live nearby in Purcellville and work with Craig. He said that he really liked the way your bike was set up and the way it sounded. I asked about what parts you had on but he could describe it to me. Anyway, I loaded up a manual, spare parts, water & gatoraide, tools a meter and a 16 pound hammer and found him right where you dropped him off. Found that his ignition fuse had blown for some strange reason. His fuse panel didn't have a spare so I just took the head light and used that till he made it back to my house. All is well and he'll be able to meet me for work at 4:30am tomorrow! We have to get together for a "putt" some time! |

I knew one of you would be on BadWed Glad it worked out, although I'm now kicking myself for not checking all the fuses (checked a couple but figured that couldn't be it ) We should definitely go riding, I'm just up the road in the North Fork area - I'll PM you with contact info. As far as mods go I have the Micron full system with the open airbox and a remapped ECU from American Sport Bike. I've also done the Lightning front fender conversion, removed the triple tail (wish I had that to give Craig a lift), Renthal medium bars, and finally repainted it VooDoo Blue to match my Toyota FJ. I'll post some pics later on. Anyway, nice meeting y'all - talk to you later |

Dang, no one ask me what the 16 pound hammer was for? I guess you all know! |

If your ignition fuse is blowing and the dash instruments are dead your fuel pump wires could be shorting out. I was left stranded in Bryce Canyon Utah about 10 days ago...had to have the bike towed to Hurricane, Utah for a new fuel pump..find the posts on this and look at the pictures...this is a RECALL situation.... |

Another Ignition fuse here! At 7400 miles 06 Uly riding fast on the PA Turnpike after just stopping to reinsert my earplugs. I wound it out in the lower gears which I do occasionally since I tend to stay below 4000 rpm mostly. About a minute later and a mile down the road going straight and upright the engine and tach and speedo died just like the key had been turned off. Eventually found the 15 amp ignition fuse had a very slight void (almost didn't catch it visually). Did not look like most shorted fuses I have seen. Popped in the spare fuse and cautiously rode another 65 miles home without problems. Bike was dry but warm from riding about 20 miles at interstate speed. No evidence of moisture anywhere that I could connect to this event. I am wondering if the hard acceleration had some connection. Does hard acceleration increase the load on any particular electrical components to the point that it could bump up against the circuit amperage capacity. Also, the PA Twp rest stop did not seem to have the right size fuses on hand. Good thing there was a spare in the fuse box. I will be carrying a few more after this experience. Adrian_8 mentioned fuel pump wires. I am not sure how to check this. I am wondering what the HD shop would do since the problem is not evident at this point? Should I take it to the shop now or wait to see if it happens again? I am using the 2007 seat. I don't see any wear issues in the immediate area of the ECM and battery. |
