Anyone have any real life experience with the Sportec M1? Metzeler says they're great (of course!) and so does a couple of on-line motorcycle magazines. The parts guy, who I do actually trust, says they're warm and sticky from almost the minute you start the bike...sounds good, but is it too good? |

I liked 'em on my S1, but went for longer treadlife on the other bikes. Today I'd be running the Dunlop Qualifiers for a hot street tire. |

I started using Sportec M1s back in '02 on my '99 Cyclone. I've gone through probably ~6 sets of them between my Cyclone and my Firebolt. The M1 is a very good tire. They're plenty sticky even when cold. On my Cyclone I trusted them enough to drag the pegs on my way out of the parking lot of the apartment complex where I lived at the time. Even on my Firebolt I've never found their limits on the street. With proper inflation and limited interstate time I can consistently get ~5k miles out of an M1 rear, although I do run them till the center has no more tread. The downside is that I did find their limits in the beginner class on the track. They were fine through the morning sessions on track, but in the afternoon sessions when I started to go faster they started to move around a bit. I ended up lowsiding before the day was over. If you're really fast you can probably find their limits on the street. Also, they don't take kindly to extended interstate runs, especially in the summer heat. This weekend my wife and I took a trip to the mountains on my M1-equipped Firebolt. Before the trip my rear tire was worn past the wear bars in the center of the tire, but still had some tread left. ~400 interstate miles later the tire was already starting to show the cord down the center. The M1 is still a good tire, but they are getting a bit long in the tooth. I've enjoyed them over the past few years, but I'll probably move on to something else next time around like M3s, Pilot Power 2CTs, or Diablo Corsa IIIs. |
