There is a thread over on Advrider where people are indicating that Garmin will no longer supply a second unlock code for a legal copy of Mapsource. Also, they told me on the phone that the Mapsource license is *not* transferable. So even if you sell (or buy) a legally purchased Garmin unit, you cannot transfer the software license to follow the unit (legally). Just something to take into account when you look into buying a Garmin... especially if you will ever want to sell it or get a backup unit. The software license you will be forced to agree with is unusually and excessively restrictive. | ||

This has been discussed some in the public alt.satellite.gps.garmin newsgroup too. Especially loyal customers that may have factored the earlier policy into their buying decisions. There are people out there now that can and will unlock the Garmin products for nominal fees. Garmin may be surprised at the results of this change if they can't find a way to close all the chinks in their armor. Jack |
