Just picked up an 05 xb9sx CityX on auction and when I finally got a set of footpegs in today, got to take her out for a spin. It was a theft recovery bike, so I'm working out the various bits and pieces that need replacing. It seemed to be skittish on the throttle, hesitant, but once in the mid it seemed better. After a couple of miles, I got the check engine light on. Stopped to visit for a bit, and when back on the bike it was off. Off to another errand - back on then it lights again.

This is my first FI bike, had Harleys and a Blast before this, so I'm not familiar with what to start checking for that light. My shop manual is still enroute, hence the asking to borrow y'all's experiences. So I'd appreciate any advice on what to investigate.

Thanx!

Daniel

If the bike runs, and the engine light comes on, it is a little hard to diagnose.

When you get the shop manual, you will see the section on trouble codes. This is what you need.

The code may indicate a problem with an element of the fuel injection system, say a bad Oxygen sensor, that may also be the cause of your bad running.

In the meanwhile, you might try running it at 3200 to 3500 rpm for a couple of minutes to let the Fuel injection "learn" the current conditions, which may be quite different when the bike was last used.

A TPS, (throttle position sensor), reset, which requires a dealer, or a Buell owner with the proper software, is always a good idea when the history of the bike is unknown.

If the 05 is the same as an 06 you can take the seat off and you will see a little gray plug velcro down next to the fuse box. It should have four pins w/ one and two being on the right. Jumper them together w/ like 18g wire or speaker wire in general.

Turn the key to on, power switch to on and once the engine diag light goes out it will then blink your error code. You will get two numbers out of the blinking. It should go six fast flashes then the first number (blink {3 sec pause} blink} then six second pause then last number. It will then repeat the process.

Again this is the process for an 06. Post the code and I will post the diag.

Cafeelite,

Followed your instructions and seem to have gotten a "3" for both numbers. I'll be curious to see what that portends.

Thanx!

Hmmmm.....fuel pump huh? Well an additional fact: when I flip the power switch, I hear a rather loud servo sound for approx 1s. As I have no reference for comparison, is that normal for a buell?

If that is my culprit, where on a bike with no tank does the pump go? Almost sounds like a Zen koan that. Aside from checking electrical connectors, any other things to look out for? Perhaps a clogged fuel filter? Which itself would be where? Worse comes to worse, how much do the fuel pumps run and would anybody have a part number?

Thanx for the 20 A's.

The whine is normal, i think its the pump priming.

Hopefully others that know more will chime in soon. I think the pump is a pita to replace. You should get a repair manual, they run about $50 and it has all kinds of diagnostic procedures.

I think the issue was the electrical connector to the fuel pump. I messed with it and the whine was a third as loud. After a test ride, I ziptied the plug supertight and it fixed the issue completely. It was like getting a whole new bike! Also got my shop manual in finally, so hopefully I won't have to bug y'all more.

Thanx though!
