Hey guys. Just had a very interesting experience on the old I-5. I was in the far left lane(fast lane)minding my own business when a lane drifting idiot entering the freeway decided to cross 4 lanes into ME. Yep right into ME, pushed my bike into the jersey barrier at 75 mph. I gathered it up just in time to miss the plate # of said MORON, so no joy for me getting retribution. Anyway, damage was a small scratch on my MINT frame, and the loss on my bar end mirror(bars smacked the barrier HARD). So, KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN FOR MORONS. and ride safe. ps, this post may seem a little rushed, I am still shaking from the incident. | ||

Glad to hear you are OK. Sucks that it happened but we can't be "minding our own business" out there, we have to mind THEIR business too. | ||

That sucks. These are the kind of people that I hope and pray die in front of me...and a horrible death at that! I'm confused. Did you lay the bike down? or did you "just" sideswipe the barrier? | ||

Thanks guys, I am OK, just really pissed right now. Disturbed, Got your point  . I do mind their business too, just a given as a rider in my mind. So my choice of words was poor. 07xb12scg, Nope, didn't go down, almost did but held her up. The most sickening sound in the world is hearing my XB's left side being ground down by a concrete barrier at 70+mph, kind of a scraping sound from hell. | ||

Wow. What kind of sound did the vinyl seat cover make when you ripped it off with your butt cheeks? Glad you held her up. I suppose we don't need to even mention you probably got charged about three of your nine lives for that one. | ||

sounds like a fun ride!.. my titanium knuckled gloves have come in handy for the people trying to shove me out of my own lane a few times last year. buckle a fender and people wake up REAL fast. its been good so far this year | ||

Didn't you see him enter the freeway ? I am always very wary of other vehicles entering/exiting multi-lane roads. Bikes are small and fast and difficult to see; it sucks but it's just how it is. You are invisible and you don't have right-of-way, no matter what the rules/law says. | ||

I hit that barrier hard and wasn't going to risk losing parts or riding a damaged bike at any speed. I noticed the car enter at my 4 o'clock. She entered the freeway at a normal speed and didn't seem to be a threat until she noticed a semi in the lane left of her, OH, BOY, for some reason she had to stop that semi from passing so she started by cutting him off(left turn into his lane 2 feet off his nose), the next in the left was a Miata, cut her off too, and then VIOLA right into me. Happened like a shot, I did see here in my mirrors but had nowhere to go, well, almost nowhere, my choices were the side of her car or the wall. Guys, you'll notice in my profile that I have been riding for over 20 years. My quote to new riders is telling them "You have a target painted on you that every car wants to hit". I have always been overly cautious in traffic situations, still am. But, everyone gets bit now and then even when you do everything right. | ||

Wow, that's scary! Glad you came out relatively unscathed. I've had relatively few close calls on the SoCal freeways, but they were all my fault for not paying enough attention to what the cagers around me were doing. A few times I've gotten into sticky situations and escaped by the "When in doubt, gas it" reflex and aimed for open space. Don't know if that would've worked for you, but, don't ever forget, Instant Torque is your friend. Your story, the situation for how it evolved and the results remind me of what appears in the "Street Strategy" articles in Motorcycle Consumer News. This is where they discuss various strategies when encountering the normal obstacles or unusual situations that motorcyclists face daily. Again, glad you came out OK. | ||

Luxor: OK. I will not second guess your decisions during or after the crash. We all claim to know how we'd react in a situation like this, but when we actually face it instincts just take over. I won't say "just be glad you're OK" because I think that's the dumbest statement ever. You're fine, but what about the bike?! Humans heal, bikes don't! :'( I hope that A-hole in that car gets what they deserve - to be T-boned by a tractor trailer doing 60MPH.! >:-D OFF TOPIC Sparky: How is MCN? I got a thing in the mail for a cheap subscrition and it looked very informative, but I did't take the offer. It looked more like a B&W newspaper than it did a magazine. Pretend your are invisible to everyone. Even when you park it in a parking lot. Regardless of the bike being bright red, bright yellow, or whatever and the fact that it's just plain odd looking if you don't have one someone will hit you or your bike! | ||

MCN is black and white and small, but it's great. It looks smaller than it is because there aren't many ads. Lots of good info in there. | ||

More Off Topic Re MCN? One thing I like about MCN is that it is not only written by motorcyclists for motorcyclists, but it exists solely by subscriptions -- there's no paid advertising. It's pretty much like a technical newsletter, not glamorous, just the black & white facts. They report how well a product works or not without worrying about offending an advertiser, because there are none. Other stuff I like are the occasional used bike market values, Proficient Motorcycling articles, the aforementioned Street Strategies, impartial bike & new product evaluations, Medical Motorcycling. That's cool stuff you don't see in ordinary newstand magazines. Back to the topic. I don't think people normally intend to harm motorcyclists, rather, most of the drivers I encounter seem to prefer to get out of the way of bikers when things are not rushed. Maybe they don't want to get their cars scratched? But when things get tense, like during heavy rush-hour traffic, you see people take chances trying to get the right-of-way. This is when people get excited and tunnel-visioned while looking out for number 1, themselves, and where they want to go. It's sorta like when two people are walking towards one another and one will intentionally not acknowledge the other, hoping the other person will move out of their way. These are the unsociable selfish morons that cause accidents to "happen". I hope you find out who did this and justice prevails. Hit and Run is a serious offense. | ||

I had a set of those horns on my last bike. I am thinking the CityX needs a big Diesel horn upgrade. The mmeep mmeep road runner horn is cute, but hardly effective. | ||

Check out the Stebel Nautilus 139db airhorn. I've got one wedged behind my flyscreen.
