I have been working on putting a 2000 model swing arm on my S2, and I ran into an issue that I need some advice on. When the swing arm is in place the metal bushing that goes inside of the bearing on the swing arm sticks out about 1/64th of an inch past the swing arm bracket. With everything put back together you can just see a little bit of daylight behind the isolator. Is this an issue? I have been up all night assembling and dissasembling it to try and correct it but with no luck. I didn't like the way it looked but if it isn't a safety/handling/reliability issue then I'll put it back together again, and be ready for a long weekend of riding..... Any thoughts on this???? | ||

Are you using the S-2 adjusters and isolator bushings so you can tighten down the bearing preload correctly? Been years since I did mine but I sure do not recall any issues. But I used all the S-2 parts except swingarm. BTW, you do know that there will be frame interference with your S/A and lower frame downtubes if you are a big guy or hit big bump.I relieved the R/S as it was the worst but still hit on occasion. | ||

that is ok buffalo bolt.. set your pre load like fire man said. then center it up so it is evenly spaced on both sides then tighten up the clamping bolts. be very careful when routing the brake line.. make sure it dosent get pinched or like mine " rub the rear tire and blow out".. before you reinstall the shock, set your belt tension.. find the tightest point and adjust from there.. belt will look crazy loose when your done but leave it.. will work fine.. aaron | ||

Thanks for the reply guys! Jim, I actually tried it several ways with both the S2 adjusters and the X1 adjuster. After all the trials I noticed that the new swing arm is slightly wider than the S2 swing arm. There is no side to side play when the swing arm is in the mount. I also took the mount that came with the swing arm and it mounts up perfect there! It is slightly wider. I figured if I had to I could switch the swing arm mount. But that looks like a pain in the butt to get to that top inside nut above the tranny. As for clearance on the seat support down tubes, I have 5" of wheel travel above unloaded suspension, and 1" below, for a total of almost 6" of travel. I run with the suspension a bit on the stiff/sporting side so I'm hoping not to bottom it out. Again, thanks for the input! I'll put it back together again and take her for a spin... | ||

Aaomy, Thanks for the tip on setting the belt tension before mounting the wheel. I didn't think about that! I would have had it WAAYYY to tight! Everything seems to be working OK. Your post on this modification was a great help! The only thing is I probably still erred on the side of running the belt too loose to compensate for the movement of the swing arm. This morning I hit it pretty hard and it jumped a tooth or two! Not a good feeling... I''adjust it up and see how it does on the trip to VA. Thanks again for the input. |
