So, I've got my muffler and headers off and my engine in the rotated position. Gonna send the headers and new D&D to Jet-Hot for coating.

Then I got to thinking(scary I know). The install order is headers and rotate the engine back up. I should probably test start after making all my connections just to make sure I didn't miss anything and she runs right.

And I prob oughta do that before installing the muffler 'cause if did miss something that required rotating the motor again, the muffler would be one more PITA thing to remove.

So, anyone ever start their bike with just the headers? I imagine it'll probably be pretty loud and rough sounding.

Anyone ever ride their bike w/just the headers? I'm not planning too(it'd require installing things that would have to come right off again to install the muffler).

When I installed my friend's Jardine, I started it with just the headers to see what it'd sound like. What do you know, it sounded just like a Harley with "drag" pipes. Didn't really care too much for it myself. I wouldn't personally ride with it like that.

My $.02

What do you know, earlier today I found a video of an 07 12R without a muffler installed. Check it out on YouTube

I rode mine up and down the street (header only) for a round trip of 1/4 mile during my race kit to drummer swap. Sounds nasty....but was just messing around.

Here's a video of my '04 XB12R with just the open header: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Gc2Ms7yd-E

My camera doesn't pick up the sound very well once I blip the throttle, but it sounds beastly. Way too loud to ride it that way on the street though.

07xb12scg & Spike,

Thx for the links!!!

OMFG that sounds MEAN! Agree that's too much for the street, besides with my luck I'd probably melt something around the header exit.

I will still have to fire it up for myself before installing the muffler for purely, uh, scientific reasons.

I'm sure neighbors love this sort of thing...

Thx again for the links.

Spike: I spotted the Z50 in the back. Is that for you or for your kid(s)?

And which exhaust did you end up going with?

No kids here (yet), the Z50 is all mine:

It's one of my favorite toys.

As for the XB exhaust, I ended up with a drummer.

Spike: My 50 is one of my favorite toys too. I bought a leftover 2005 CRF50 last year. I love it and still ride it a couple of times a week.

Wait a second...I saw those photos on another post too.

Ok to run for a bit.

FYI WARNING
Open stock headers could let some cold air into the system and crack a valve.

I ran open header for a couple days around town with no problems. Its loud as hell, and fun for screwing with the Harley guys! I like cruising in open header drag cars though, so as you can imagine, I enjoy loud vehicles...

Shoot... the first time I took my muffler off, you better believe I rode it up and down the street a few times. The sound was beautifully obnoxious, kind of like a Top Fueler (Top Bueller?).

Djkaplan,

LOL. I was drinking when I read your post.

You owe me a new keyboard!

Barker, scary thought. Any worries in 80+F weather?

followed a Buell M2 running open stock headers for 50 miles. Girlfriend on back. They were having fun. stopped for fuel, guy said he'd been running it that way for a couple YEARS.
Did not seem to be having any problem with valves.

I think every bike I've ever owned and worked on has gone for the mandatory lap around the retirement village minus the muffler. The XB9R and 2004 VFR800 are the only bikes to ever get a follow up visit from the cops. Man did that VFR sound mean once the VTEC pissed off and let it rev. Twins have a real nice note, whereas I4 all sound the same.
