Which raises the question...What IS all that "valve train" noise if there is zero lash? My neighbor converted his Bug to hyd. lifters and it became MUCH quieter. | ||

you mean the coffee can full of nickels that sits under the airbox? psh... just get a loud muffler and there ya go. Then nobody can hear your coffee can full of nickels. | ||

That is easy too...most of them that are moving, and those that are acted upon by those that are moving. Have you ever heard a HD engine with quiet pipes? That is why there are so many optional pipes. That is also the reason HD 60W exists.  | ||

If your Buell doesn't sound like a hand full of nickels in a blender then something is wrong with it. I love mine! Oh yeah and there is no such thing as valve adjustment on these pushrod motors. They are self adjusting. | ||

Even though the valve train is hydraulic, the parts still move and there is still lash during certain parts of the valve lift cycle. The architecture of the engine also tends to amplify valve train noise. Motorcycles don't need to meet the same NVH specs as automobiles so little engineering effort is put into reducing noise. Many would say the noise is welcomed as part of the bike's "character". Doesn't bother me at all. | ||

It's not so much that the "character" bothers me, character is one of the reasons I bought a Buell. I'm not really looking to drown it out,just identify the source. | ||

I agree with Blake. If any of you have ever stood next to a blown big-block drag car there are alot of odd noises, but it makes you hair stand on the back of your neck!! | ||

There are five points of contact in "each" valve train AND we don't have water jackets. I think that most of what you hear is the valves closing against the heads. That's about the only place where something should be slamming against something else in the valve train. The other stuff would be the chain on the tensioning shoe I believe. | ||

Backlash between cam drive gears is another source. The valve springs via the rockers and pushrods and lifters can actually backdrive the cams and their gears as the cam lobe rotates past peak lift. | ||
