sometimes i get a small grind when starting from neutral to first , i have the clutch usually pulled all the way in, and sometimes ill get this. I found that sometime when i push lighter it does this but i will try to push harder as will this be the answer? Is the clutch going? its an 04 xb12s with under 3700 miles under warranty

Normal sound. Get used to it. Nothing is "wrong". The tranny is a bit agricultural ^_^

Mine is the same. Don't be soft with it. clutch in and a nice "positive" tap down into first. Of cause if it is worse than usual then check the clutch (and cable) adjustment.

It's normal, I've got this tranny in both my bikes (XL883C, XB9SX). I start mine in neutral, let them warm up for a few seconds, then let the clutch out (firm grip on front brake -- just in case...). Then I pull the clutch back in and give it a firm shift into first. A slow shift when the tranny is cold seems to be a recipe for the grinding noise.

It helps a lot if you roll the bike slightly back and forth, and blip the gas right before you do shift into 1st.

Yeah, I see this too when the bike is cold typically. The mechanic I spoke to about it at Independence H/D said you just need to "shift like you mean it." I believe I was also complaining about occasionally missing 2nd gear. A clutch adjustment and adjusting the shift lever a tad solved all my problems. I do occasionally get the sound you describe when it's cold, but it seems only when I'm absent minded and don't shift firmly.

the clutch plates seem to stick a bit after sitting for a while. when I remember I usually put it in gear with the engine off pull the clutch in and move the bike forward and back.

You could also try pumping the clutch lever a few times before "authoritatively" engaging first gear.

Yeah it helps put extra wear and tear on your transmission. Do NOT do this.

Blipping the throttle helps when making a down shift while riding but not when going into first from a stop. Blipping the throttle will increase the force that the 1st gear dog has to absorb when going into first from a stop.

Like has already been said, move the shifter like you mean it. Clunking is normal. "grinding" is NOT normal.
