If the 95-97 tube-framed Buells (M2) came with Brembo brakes, can I just swap the caliper of one of these for a 2-piston caliper like the one from Banke that costs $84 ? http://www.bankeperformance.com/project/brakes.html It's the same brake as what comes in the kit from American Sport Bike, but it's just the caliper only. Much cheaper than the whole kit. The maker of the kit, QTM, told me they would sell the mounting bracket alone for $205 by the way. |

Only if the bolt holes in the mounting bracket are the same. Brembo makes several different calipers and it's a given that they will interchange. And if you have a custom bracket fabricated by a machinist it will most like cost considerably more then $205.00. I'm a machinist and I've constructed custom brackets for calipers. Usually I had to make 2 or 3 prototypes before I got them right. Kerwin Kerr |

Well, after a year and two months, I am certainly gratified, if surprised, to get a response. I appreciate your insights. For me, it turned out to be complicated even more by the master cylinder displacement (bore and piston travel.) That seems to be the reason QTM chose the particular brake they offer, as opposed to a much smaller and lighter one built by Brembo or others. The Brembo (and other brands') smaller/lighter unit appears more suitable to the application, but would also require a change of master cylinder, making it more expensive overall, and perhaps seeming a bit less like a 'bolt-on' replacement. I still haven't got this sorted out yet, and continue to simply use the stock setup in the meantime. After getting used to it, it doesn't seem so bad now after all; or perhaps I just ride less aggressively than I anticipated back then. People often talk about M2 pegs touching the ground, and I have yet to do that. |
