Hi Everyone and thank you for taking the time to read this.

I bought my XB12R back in March. The problems started when I burnt the stock clutch plates. My shop put aftermarket (barnette, i think) and thats when everything went downhill!!! The bike would not shift into neutral at a standstill unless I would hold the clutch and rev to 2k RPM.

I lowsided the bike in the Canyons at about 20mph in november. After that when shifting through the gears the bike would not go into 3rd gear. On upshifting you'd go into 1st, 2nd, then try 3rd with no effect. After a few "up kicks" the bike would go into 4th, then 5th. Same thing would happen going down gears.

The shop put a new sett of barnette clutch plates and a muller clutch. (BTW, I have the American Sport Bike hydraulic clutch kit since may or so). Still same problem. They then took apart the entire motor and from my understanding put new clutch plates, a new aftermarket shifter kit which consisted of the shift rod and that star piece at the end, and (from what I say) new shift gears for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th (I think thats what they were called).

At the same time they also de-smogged the bike at the same time.

So now, I got my bike back, the bike shifts through the gears, but you have to really Kick the lever hard with alot of force. And on-top of that the speedo isn't working properly, it jumps around like crazy!

Someone please shed some light, am I nit picking that the shift should be short and smooth with a light flick of the foot, because thats how stock was? And is the speedo thing because of the desmogging?

I live in Orange County, CA and havn't heard of one shop thats reliable and can work on a Buell properly. Is this the price we pay for being differant? Does anyone know a shop they can stand behind?

Thanks again to anyone who read this, I really appriciate it and thank you!!!

You can see a video of the problem below. I think the issue is the shift lever not resetting...

Shaft is bent, or the return spring broke.

I suspect that the clutch isn't adjusted properly. The Hydraulic clutch changes the procedure a little, and the dealer probably doesn't understand the difference.

The combination of the Muller and the hydraulic clutch works fine, but it makes the clutch adjustment critical as you lose a little bit of throw with the setup. IF the clutch pack is adjusted with too much freeplay, you might not be getting enough clutch disengagement.

Is it easy to find neutral when the bike is warmed up, or does it jump from first to second to first to second when trying to put it in neutral?

If it is that, bring it by the shop and I'll adjust the clutch and show you how to do it.

Al, his shift lever insn't returning to center. He has bigger problems than clutch adjustment.

Yea, I just looked at the video. You're right, that's a bigger deal. Hopefully that is just the spring, and the neutral issue is just the clutch adjustment.

Shaiss, sorry about your problems.

The only dealership I would trust with my Buell would be the dealership I bought it from: San Diego Buell off of Kearney Mesa, across from the SD International Airport. They specialize in Buells and race Buells too. So their mechanics are pretty knowledgeable. It's a long ways from O.C. though. About 100 miles of freeway but it's easy enough to get there as it's all freeway and the dealership is like 1/2 from the exit.

If you need a ride or something, let me know. You have my cell phone number. I'll be out of town next week from Wed-Sun. But I will be available the following weekend.

Good luck.

Does the shift lever return to center freely without the engine running (when engagement dogs line up)? If so, then the return spring is OK. If not, then the spring is suspect. But if there is resistance to the shift shaft turning, then something could be bent or binding inside.

The return spring broke on my big twin once and the lever would only stay up or down wherever it was last placed. But the gearchange was effortless maybe even moreso with no spring resistance to work against.
