bought what I thought was 8 quarts of 20w50 synthetic oil today. got home changed the oil and as I am putting the second quart of oil in I notice that it seems less viscous than the last quart. so I turn the bottle around and to my horror it was 5w30. It appears that the first bottles on the rack were 20w50 and the rest were 5w30 and I did not check because they were directly behind the 20w50 on the same shelf. So I continued filling with 20w50 and rode around to see if it was up to the full level. Should I just empty the oil and start over with new oil or will the 3/4 or less of 5w30 make the engine wear faster?

The viscosities average, so assuming a total volume of 2.5 quarts, you have:

(5 * (.75) + 20 * (2.5-.75))/2.5 = 15.5
(30 * (.75) + 50 * (2.5-.75))/2.5 = 44

15w44

Jlnance,
NICE. Great math wizardry. You win the freak math award.
Really awesome.
Will it be ok though?

Tank, I think it will be ok. There is a chart in your owners manual which tells you what weights are ok. 10w40 is in the list, you're thicker than that. I am however not an oil expert.

When I rode my S3 more in the cold weather I would switch to 5W30 for the duration of the cold weather. I caught some heat from the guys that think that I should have used 20W50 all the time but my bike is still running fine. I just felt that the thinner oil would reduce wear on cold starts.
