I have a Dodge Ram less than 60,000 miles. water pump went out today. Replaced it drove 20 miles and brand new water pump gave out. What would cause a brand new water pump to blow. Any ideas | ||

Was it a re-built from a auto part store or new? If it was a rebuilt it should have a garantee of some sort for failure like that. What kind of failure was it? | ||

You didn't happen to use Stop Leak did you? That stuff really does a number on a cooling system. | ||

Did the water pump blow or gasket around it???? I second spideys question about was it new or a rebuilt. I have had some issues with poorly rebuilt water pump. It is under warranty for sure...... | ||

From what I've been told it can clog things up. Once the hole is filled with the Stop Leak, all the rest that wasn't used has to go somewhere, and it can cause clogs in places you don't want it to. I play it safe, if somethings leaking, I fix the leak instead of trying to patch it. I'd like another air cooled pushrod car, but they're getting pretty expensive these days. | ||

Ok i bought it from Advanced auto parts. The garage i put it on at their also good friends of mine its a father & son garage. I called the parts store and they gave me the run around. I called my buddy at home and told him he got ahold of his dad. They came right out to my house. But first they stopped off at advanced auto and the old man had a go at them. Lets just say their going to have a new pump at the store first thing tomorrow and their going to give me a new Belt that got chewed up even though i bought the belt at another parts store. I don't know what the old man said to them but i just got a phone call from the head office they were very nice to me. Im not even sure how they got my #. But anyway my buddy and the old man came over checked the pump out and sure enough the bearing went out i can take the fan and move it all over the place. So the short of the story is still not sure why the New pump gave out. But not long after the old man showed up i had a flat bed pulling in picking my truck up taking it back to the garage. That just goes to show you their is still garages out there that don't try and rip you off. Yes they are my friends but they are also great garage owners. So tomorrow we'll find out what went wrong & where. Did i forget to mention the garage is closed on Saturdays but it'll be open this saturday until they figure the problem out. From what they tell me the pump is probably reconditioned. | ||

Glad things got takin care of! Sometimes you get a "Friday" water pump, or they just screwed up in the rebuild warehouse... | ||

Clint- I had an autoparts repair shop replace a starter on an S10. He said that it took him twice as long to replace as he estimated but he only charged me the quote, 3 starts later it burned up. He replaced the bad one, no charge. I took it back in due to a crank shaft oil leak, he had to fix it a couple of times. I'm not sure if he was incompetent, but he was honest. Unfortunately he went out of business. A good mechanic will stand up to bad parts. | ||

I worked at a parts house many moons ago and learned firsthand that new/rebuilt is no guarantee it will last or even function right out of the box. | ||

It is probably just a defective pump ... it happens. Make sure to check your fan clutch. Sometimes the bearing in the fan clutch will go bad, throwing it out of balance. If this happens, it is hard on the waterpump bearings. Good luck. | ||
