I'm looking into getting an Lightning XB9, but i don't know much about the difference in the years. The only thing i know is the 05+ have translucent plastics, pucks, light guard, hand guard, and x thing on the tank. Has the engine changed at all? If i get an 03, what would you do to it? |

04 got a new belt & pulleys (sprockets). 05 got a new one piece throttle body & a new ecm. 05 also got the bigger 43mm forks. 05 got the 12 inner airbox cover with the inverted niple. in 06 they got the new helical tranny. New swingarm and an even newer belt. The pulleys (sprockets) remain the same, only the belt itself changed. Not sure about this one but I think 06 got the upgraded oil pump gear as well. On edit: If I got an 03 the first thing I would do would be to replace the the pulleys (sprockets) with the 04+ ones & get an 06+ belt. I would also replace the inner air box cover with one from a 12. That inverted niple makes a HUGE difference. (Message edited by metalstorm on April 04, 2007) |

I was told that the vortex replacement will get you maybe 1hp at top end. Replacing the sprocket with the new belt is a must. I'm doing that as well as using a 1200 primary. |

Couple other minor things off the top of my head: '04 has a different shift lever, the aluminum portion of the toe peg is longer. It looks the same as the '03 from the outside, but on the '03 part of the toe peg is just rubber and flexes more than the '04+ shifter. '04 has longer passenger peg brackets, which places the passenger pegs about an inch or two lower. '05 has different steering head bearings. '05 has replaceable bulbs in the dash. '05 has a newer fuel pump that's quieter and is supposed to be better at avoiding fuel starvation under braking. The fuel pump change was actually mid-year on '05s, I think the new pump was on all the bikes with a build date later than September '04. '06 frame doesn't have the hole for the intake on the left side, it's sealed up and allows another tenth of a gallon of fuel. |

I left out the "what would I do with an '03" part. If I bought an '03 today the only thing I'd definitely change would be the belt/pulleys. It's a bit pricey to buy everything at once, so if the stock belt looked ok I might just ride it for a while and wait for the stocker to break. The newer airbox lid would help it breath a little better, and if you don't mind extra sound an aftermarket pipe (Drummer!) would also help it breath better. Other than that I'd change all the fluids (including the fork oil), adjust the suspension to my weight, throw on some new tires and then ride the wheels off the thing. |

If I recall correctly, the '03 belt had a recommended replacement interval of 25K miles. The '06 belt should never have to be changed (unless it gets damaged). |

One that does seem nice about Buell is there's plenty of room to make changes and customization. I was told that after my head work, new pipe and Super Trap are added, I'll be seeing 110-115 at the crank. |

don't forget about the change in the oil lines from 03 to 04..different seats from 03 to 04..different side stand....different dash...different mirrors from 03 to 04....seems almost every year there was a newer side stand.. different speedo sensor. |

The best improvement was the change to Pirelli tires, standard on the CityX at the onset, and on all models in 07. |
