trying to figure out a best guess of what is making my front brake/rotor clunk when the brakes are applied. if i hadnt checked it over and over i would think that the brake pad is grazing the rotor bolts. i cant seem to make them wiggle enough to touch when i am messing around in the garage though.

so that makes me wonder if the rotor is moving around to much and clunking. have many of you had to change your mounting hardware simply because it wore out? 17,000 very hard miles on it if so its not impossable. did you change everything or did you reuse the bolts? the bolts shouldnt really wear and are the most expensive part of replacing the hardware.

any other bright ideas would be appreciated. and yes, every time you hear a clunk, the bike brakes a hair harder then it was, and releases back to normal in between. doesnt grab real hard, but you can feel it. almost like a pulse but different. coincides with the clunking.

Can you see an imprint of a pad on your rotor?

I had something similar happening. Turned out that the hardware connecting the rotor to the rims was worn out.

Everything I've read says not to reuse those bolts.

sure it is the brakes? maybe it is in the head? isolator bolt?

Just tossing it out there, hard to tell when one is not there to see/hear it. maybe get a friend to walk/run on the side of bike listening?


since you will read this, Is there any info you can supply me with on my thread on the nitrous fuel side question?

Going to be able to make it out to MBIV?

You should check your steering head bearings. I had those symptoms a while back. Triple checked the entire braking system with no luck. Tighten to spec.

no pad imprint.

it has new steering head bearings on it. with at the most a couple thousand on them.

eric, i will look at the thread and see...
wont be making march badness im afraid. wouldnt mind one of these years though.

No rice, It can still be the steering head bearings. My old 9s only had about 2000 miles on it when I had the same problems. Bloomington Buell/HD said it was from a lot hard riding. I have also heard that we need to keep the front rotor bolts clean. If they get gummed up they can cause problems with the rotor not free floating on the the bolts. Sorry for a lack of a better term. No_rice... dumb question for ya... You got one of those cool anodized valve stem caps? I do and I noticed some marring on the backside of my caliper the other day.. With the new cap the is very little clearance. Is anything contacting the back of your caliper?
