i would like to know if it is possible to run both headlights at the same time and still have high and low beams. can i just switch the high beam lens to a low beam lens and change the bulbs to h3? what is the easiest method?}}

During the day I aways run both high and low beams at the same time. At night I also run the high beam as much as possible to be sure I am as visible as possible to the cages. To answer your question the difference between the high and low light assemblies is the low assembly has a reflector inside the housing to shape the light beam, you could remove the reflector and essentially have 2 high beam lights. A cool idea would be using a dual filament light setup and wiring for dual lights for low beam and flick the light switch and have dual high beams. But the stock Firebolt light housings have trouble with the standard bulbs.

There has been plenty of discussion on this but I just got more & more confused at the results ...
Seems theres a problem with just about every mod you attempt to achieve the twin light. what with fuses & housings burning out etc etc.

Seems like - getting a hid or new headlight system is the successful mod - rather than trying to re-wire the stock system or add dual filaments ( i could be wrong )

Believe it or not on my xb9sx - I keep the switch balanced in the middle - which gives me dual lighting without any fuss - its been working fine for a month now - i commute every day.

Good luck

To do that you'll want to change to H4 bulbs as the stock H3s are single filament and the H4s are dual filament. Also since the dual filament setup aims the beam on its own you may want to remove the metal plate in your low beam enclosure to allow the high beam to shine through when you switch it over. I could be wrong about that last part though. The only thing left to do is do a little re-wiring to make both low beam filaments on with the switch on low beam and have the low beams switch off with the high beams on, which would be wired together as well. To make the low beam turn off when the high beam is on, you'll likely have to run a "normally on" relay in the low beam circuit so that when the high beam is switched on it'll shut off the low beam filament preventing overheating of the enclosures and excessive wear on the bulbs. You need to do this since the Firebolt's low beam is normally on also when the high beam is on.

However,...

The easiest way to run dual headlights at the same time (but without high beams) is to do as you were suggesting with the dual low beam enclosures.

If my first suggestion confused you I can make a rough wiring diagram for you when I get a little more time.

Hope this helps.

Sam

The headlights are separate, 1 high and 1 low. Yes there are slightly brighter bulbs like the Sylvania Silverstars but they will only buy you limited time as the reflective coating inside the Firebolt headlight housings degrade the light output will also degrade. There are plenty of posts about this subject do a search and I am sure all your questions will be answered
