I just ordered a case for the riding season and wanted to know what other people think about AMSOIL. I have never heard anything bad about AMSOIL, but what the hell do I know? Let me know what you think.....about AMSOIL, not why Britney shaved her head, Why the sky is blue or if Jesus shops at Walmart........AMSOIL please |

Technically I cant say if its superior or not to other oils, but its cheaper that Harley Synth, and I find its getting difficult finding 20/50 wt. A local custom choppers shop, uses it their big Vtwins. |

Get this, when I was talking to the sales rep. he asked if I was using it in my cars. I said no and then he told me that I would only need to change AMSOIL every 25000 miles or once a year. If I used their air filter & put a can of their injector cleaner in the gas I would get 2 to 3 more miles per gallon o gas. That sounds good........to good, but I may give it a try |

Amsoil is a class III synthetic oil....not really a synthetic at all. |

OK - I'm biased, having previously worked for Mobil as tech sales/lube engineer, but I don't like Amsoil. The salesman's claim about 25k/annual oil changes supports my very subjective gut reaction: that's sales hype. My objective response is to consider all of the operational variables that could make such a recommendation potentially dangerous to your car engine's well-being. |

I almost have a feeling it sorta a pyramid deal.. I went amsoil dude at the local bike night and he was like buy a membership and you get a discount and save money... etc....... I had flash back of a friend taking me to a amway meeting many years ago.. Run... |

It IS a pyramid thing. Sure you can buy the product but if you talk to an individual doing the selling, it's pretty soon going to turn into a pitch about getting going selling, getting people to sell FOR you ... multilevel marketing. Shaklee, Amway, Amsoil, there's more. The product itself isn't all that bad but the selling thing that a friend pushed onto me when I asked about the product turned me off of it 20 years ago. |

Do not run any oil in any vehicle longer than the manufacturers recommended interval. I was given the 25,000 spiel by the Amsoil rep for a new vehicle. I was informed by the manufacturer that they would not warranty the engine if you went past recommended service intervals. When I approached the Amsoil rep, he told me they would go to litigation with me if there were any problems. It's just easier to go by the book and you won't need a lawyer' |

Dj's right, it's better on salad, with a little vinegar, but mostly it's just fun, when someone says Amsoil to say "AmNOT"!!! (staying on the subject) |

i stick with mobil one.2 months ago when i changed the oil on my gmc the oil filter wasnt sealing rite because a piece of gasket from the old filter so my was leaking oil as a result my truck ran on 1 quart of mobile one senthetic for 2500 miles. |

wolf, the oil filter gasket problem is the fault of the person that changed your filter not the manufactor of the filter. Oil changing 101 always make sure the old gasket is removed from the engine before installing the new oil filter. Second is always check for leaks after changing the oil. The fact that you ran your vehicle low on oil will only cause problems in the long run. No matter the oil u use. |

I tied using Amsoil (their air cooled v-twin specific 20-50)in my M2 last year. The engine started using 1 litre of oil every 600 km. After I switched back to HD 20-50 it went back to using what it had from day 1, about 1 litre every 2000 km. Just my 2 cents worth. |

I put AMSoil 20w50 in my Buell around the middle of last season (used regular H-D 20W50 up til then, while the bike was on warranty). I got it because a riding friend who owns a small engine shop sells it. Anyway, about the only difference I noticed was that the fan runs less...the bike already had close to 20,000 km on it, so I don't think it's still breaking in... I conclude the AMSoil might be a better heat transfer medium. BTW, my Firebolt doesn't seem to use any oil at all, regular or synth. |

Mine likes a sip of oil with its usual intake of gasoline...only real complaint I have with Buell, and I'm over it But back on subject, I'm looking at switching to synthetic and I was in between amsoil and mobil1. I'm glad this thread was started. |

Seems to me this is one of those "debates" that could go on forever. Some say Mobil 1 isnt a real syn, some say Amsoil isnt. I dont know, This is something from their website: http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/mcv.aspx |

"Do not run any oil in any vehicle longer than the manufacturers recommended interval" Or you can have your used oil tested and really find out if the oil needs to be changed. I've seen UOA on VW diesel have good oil at 10k miles and tested good on up to 20k. I run Amsoil in my bike becuase its cheaper than the others. Amsoil in the wifes Benz only becuase I had it on hand. I use ELF CRV 506.01 oil in my VW TDI 13 bucks a quart! |

Polyalphaolefin (PAO) = API (American Petroleum Institute) Group IV base oil Synthetic esters, etc = API Group V base oils (non-PAO synthetics, including diesters, polyolesters, alklylated napthlenes, alkyklated benzenes, etc.) Hydrocracked/Hydroisomerized = API Group III base oils. Chevron, Mobil, and other petrochemical companies developed processes involving catalytic conversion of feed stocks under pressure in the presence of hydrogen into high quality lubricating oil. In 2005 production of GTL (Gas-to-liquid) Group III base stocks began. The best of these perform much like polyalphaolefin. Motor oils formulated with Group III base stocks are considered synthetic motor oil in North America.[1][2] |

First let me state that not only have I used AMSOIL products for 30 years in all my vehicles (damn I'm getting old), I'm also a dealer. I became a dealer because I knew it was a good product and I could get it at a better price. I let people know I can get it for them , but have never push it on anyone. "Amsoil IS NOT a true synthetic,as a class III product." That statement is only partly true. AMSOIL does make a GROUP 3 BASE STOCK line, it is there XL series. The oil that AMSOIL sells for motorcycle use is a PRIMARY GROUP 4 BASE STOCK. http://www.amsoil.com/ 20W-50 http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/mcv.aspx A good read - http://www.amsoil.com/articlespr/articlegreatdebat e.aspx AMSOIL Motorcycle White Paper - http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g2156.pdf To find a AMSOIL dealer near you go here: http://www.amsoil.com/dealerlocatorresults/DealerL ocator.aspx |

Been using Amsoil about 19 years. 1982 BMW R100RT-38,406 miles 1995 FLHT-49,957 miles 1988 Ford E150-141,068 miles 1999 M2 Cyclone-34,000 miles 3.5 hp Lawnmower-17 miles? I change oil & filter once a year. No oil related problems. Bottom line is if you don't trust the extra protection-extended mileage oil change, don't buy it. |

I'd modify Buellmeister57's last comment with "...if you don't trust the extra protection-extended mileage oil change, THEN CHANGE IT AT THE REGULAR INTERVAL." Just because the manufacturer says you CAN let the oil go 25K doesn't mean you HAVE to. No one from AmsOil is going to be sitting by your bike with a shotgun saying "You're not touching the oil yet, Boy!" Sheesh. Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill... |

I keep the bike on the regular service program. But the car is where I would like to cheat. Jiffy lube says every 3000 miles Most people say every 5000 miles Dealer says every 7500 miles I like the once a year statement from AMSOIL. I think I will give it a try. |

I aint no expert, but my experience is this: I have always used Mobil1 V-twin....last summer I decided to try the Amsoil in the same weight. Bike was noisier, ran hotter(ie-fan came on a lot more). I changed it after 2000 miles and went back to Mobil. Hope it works out better for you. |

What's the skinny on Red Line oil? I read a few things about it that indicate that it is a good choice for V Twin motors. I live in an area where the traffic is bad and you can easily get stuck in stop and go traffic quite a bit. I want an oil that will perform and protect well under those circumstances. |

So, I'm gonna posta on the other side of the oil thing....... I had a 1985 CRX Si. Drove the living crap outta it. Dove it HARD. I changed the oil. Sometimes. Every 3000 miles? Uh, well, a bit more than that. Well, a LOT more than that. $ was tight. Time was tight. Occasionally I'd even find that it was more than a quart low. The car's lube diet was ANYTHING I COULD FIND. The priciest stuff it ever saw was Castrol GTX. Probably 'cause I liked the commercial on TV. That car logged well over 200k miles before suffering a non engine related death (read: accident). Honestly, for the bulk of vehicles, I feel like as long as you HAVE oil in there and it DOESN'T contain beach sand, you could probably do worse. That said, I now run M1 Synth in everything. -Saro |

I guess I am going to give Amsoil a try. I want to move my change intervals from 2k to 5k miles as recommended in the manual. That way I can plan on changing my tires and oil at the same time. I was also changing the primary chain oil at the same time so I will move that to 10k (per manual) using Amsoil in both the cases. This will really give me the gas and ride, low maintenance thrill |
