Alright gentlemen, the time of reckoning is upon me (just about). I have scoped out all of the local dealers, and on my birthday at the end of this month, Im gonna take the plunge (financially, of course) and try to take home an '07 XB9R for myself. But before I do, I have a few questions for you experienced buyers/dealer employees. What I basically want to know, is can I haggle? With automobiles you can haggle thousands of dollars, but can you do the same with bikes? Can I take advantage of the dealers need/desperation to make sales during these slow months (winter in seattle. I dont think they sell too many bikes) to knock down the price on the 9R? And if so, how much (within reason of course. I dont want to get laughed out of the dealership) might I be able to talk them down? Thanks guys. -Cale |

Yes, you can haggle, and I would say the amount is similar relative to the price compared to cars. (30,000 car- 3,000 discount=10%, 10,000 bike- 1000 discount=10%) Those are just numbers off my head by the way. Since there is multiple dealers in the area you have the opportunity to make them fight for your business. Find out what each dealership will go down to and take it to the other until they don't go down any more. Another good thing to do is don't haggle on the price, but ask for the extended warranty for just under sticker OTD. That is what I did on my 12R. I would not recommend the service contracts BTW. If you do the services yourself you will come out way ahead. |

Use the internet to your advantage. Email a bunch of dealers and get them to "BID" for your buisiness. See Who will strike the best deal. I did this after being aggrivated by the local dealers and it paid off very well. |

And don't worry the color you get. It's cheap to grab another set of plastics, and there may even be someone here on badweb that would be willing to trade! Just take whichever one you can get the cheapest. ~SM |

Good words of wisdom, guys! I think my best shots would be Eastside and Downtown, the two largest dealerships in the area. Ill have to start calling and bothering them in a week or two here and see what I can swing. Though Downtown HD, known as the best to deal with in town regarding Buells, told me last weekend no setup/freight fees while every other (three to be exact) has told me anywhere from $600-1200 extra tacked on for freight and setup. I for one, am not paying a penny of that. Its an inherent part of the business they are in! And as for plastics, the only color this ride comes in is that purty red... and if shes gonna change colors, its gonna be to a nice lightweight carbon Would it be out of line to ask how much $$ some of you were able to talk down on your bikes? |

Oh yeah, you did mention the '07 model specifically, didn't you? Guess that does limit the color options somewhat! ~SM |

When I started looking for my bike the local dealers were set on MSRP of 10,999.00. The 04 and 05 were the same set price and neither dealers would deal. So what I did was go on buell.com and found all the "Buell" dealers up and down the East Coast and I emailed them with what I was Looking for and when I was buying. The Phone started ringing almost right away.(within a few minutes...seriously) Sme called to tell me there was no way I would find one under 10k and if I did the Dealers would take there customers first and yada yada yada... The ones willing to deal with me I took there information and asked them there rock bottom dollor, I would not tell them what I was willing to pay or very much info for that matter. I then let them Bid against each other, some dropped out right away others kept lowering there price. I would email them the deal I had found and see if they could beat it. This went on for about 3 weeks and one dealership kept comming back with better deals each time. Edison HD/Buell in New Jersey was the winner for me. 7,800.00 out the door. Pete called one day after me emailing him the deal I had found in PA and he matched the price If I showed up that weekend. NJ is way closer to me Than PA. They WERE A GREAT DEALERSHIP TO DEAL WITH. And I do not say that very(if any) often about dealerships I have delt with. I saved Myself 3000.00 dollors and got the bike I have always wanted. |

@ Firebolteric. I cannot believe you got a deal like that! Thats just insane cheap..I mean thats a 12R for less than the 9R MSRP. Im starting to get a good idea of what I can pull with these guys. Do you think purchasing in the winter months would also give me a little more pullon their price? |

I would think so. I thought I would have some pull w/ the local dealers when getting mine as the new 05 models had just come out that month and the ridding season was pretty much spent. Locally I had no luck. That is why I took the drive to the one who was willing to deal. I told myself For the money saved I was willing to drive a full day to get it.(each way) Luckily one a bit closer came through for me. Let them know you are willing to travel to buy it and you will. I think you need to find a dealer willing to deal more than anything. Around my area they were not willing to step away from the MSRP price..I did want to buy locally too, I really did. But them guys were not even willing to give 500.00 off on a left over which is what made me mad... This is one of the main reasons I HATE DEALERSHIPS around my parts. I didn't get the extended plan or nothing (these machines are pretty solid) and I am Glad as I have never needed anything for it. I do all my own work on it out of spite on them. I went a couple times for a TPS reset, what an ordeal that was....3 times to the dealership for it to get it right, I now have Direct Link and the VDSTS software so I am not at the mercy of them guy. |

I just bought a 07 Ulysses a few weeks ago from Eastside. Talk to Jason Cassem, Scott Moon or Scott Cook. All good people. I talked numbers with Scoot Moon and Jason did the deal. I paid a few hundred more than THAT dealership in Florida when they include shipping from Florida in the price but I wanted to support a local dealership. I did not pay the dealer freight and setup. Also, followup has been really good and these guys support Buells. Scott Moon actually rides a Ulysses. Hope that helps! Whatever you decide good luck in your purchase. |

I got the dealership down from $10,999 to $8,999 and then paid about $1,500 for the extended warranty, which has only been used for the clutch cable clip and a couple belts. I believe that when it was all said and done I borrowed about $11,000 after taxes. That was for an 04 12R at the beginning of August 2004. They were trying to get the 04s off the showroom floor to make room for the 05s. |

Got frieght & PDI at no cost on my City X, saved me about $600 Plus taxes. Saved about $1500 plus taxes in total by shopping around at dealers for the best price. Also got them to a free Buell shirt. Found a dealer that was asking $750 above Buell's list price, they lost a sale. |

Well I sold these bikes for a year in Florida....I can tell you we let the '05 XB9R's out the door for $7660.00 Plus $795.00 Freight and PDI...and if they were out of state $200.00 Documentation fees, now if I were in your position I would do exactly this...personally extended warranties are a scam, lemme tell ya why, the dealership gets these at a reduced rate and "sells" them to you at a book price, their cost is low enough to through them in easily depending on the list of the bike..now if warranty is an issue for you that might be a good thing to ask for. I would think you should be able to get out the door on an '07 9R $8500.00 with some fringes, ie warranty, helmet or leather jacket...maybe a ballistic jacket or a gift certificate for at least $200.00 bucks...I remember the guys that did what Eric did, I never lowered my price, I quoted my best first and just let it go from there...depends on the sales guy you get, if a guy told me he was fishing I did the same, but I sold a lot of bikes so there wasn't any pressure...look man, Haggling is just this, know EXACTLY what you want to spend, on everything, if you are financing, KNOW you credit score before you go in, and in fact if you can get financing outside the dealership it is better because they will bump you points from harley financial and rates for Buells are high unless the Dealership is willing to pay the buy down for a program..if any are available at the time...once you know your figure DO NOT DEVIATE...if you have cash it is a better deal or certified funds, easier for the salesman to plead his case to the sales manager for a quick deal, DON'T BE AFRAID TO WALK OUT AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE EVEN IF THE BIKE YOU WANT IS RIGHT THERE!! I cannot stress this enough, don't be bullied, you will find what you want so BE PATIENT, impatient people ALWAYS pay more...alright, I am off the soap box. |

We have that Red XB9R right by the door, ready to ride... All of our 05's & 06's have left like Elvis. And we are pushing really hard to have our O7s sell out too. Had a fun Super Buell sale on sunday Good day to ride, traffic was really light. |

795.00 for frt and setup? Frt is 245.00 now, it was 240 back then Setup here is 140.00 No wonder they could sell them for such a low price, making it up in elevated "fees" 200.00 for Doc fees? ours is 50.00 I agree though, about 8500.00 including frt and set up is fair. |

In October, I paid 9200 + tax + licensing + an extra 1500 or something for the extended warranty on an 06 XB12Ss. The MSRP is 10,500 I believe, so they took 1300 off the MSRP and I didn't pay for shipping or setup or anything like that. I did it at Downtown Harley in Tukwila. It seems like a good deal, but their sales manager was a ****ing ***hole. At first he was really nice, I basically talked to him on the phone about the bike and then went in. It was on their floor and it looked good, so I agreed to the price and came back to the next day to buy it. After I signed all the papers and paid and everything, they brought me out to the bike to I guess show me where the brakes are (duh?), and as the last "step" of the extremely long purchase process, they asked me to look over the bike and make sure everything is in good condition. At this point I noticed a chip about the size of a pinky fingernail in the side of the front rim. I pointed it out to the sales guy I was working with, and he left to talk to the sales manager. The sales manager basically gave me a big "**** off" and told me either I can have 20% off anything in their clothing store OR he would gob some touch up paint on it. To me, that's not kosher. I didn't see the chip the first day I looked at the bike. They took it off the floor and stored it somewhere overnight, and it was chipped the next day. But of course they didn't show it to me until after all the paperwork was signed and I'd already been at the dealer 2 damn hours while they do paperwork (what a load of crap). I wanted a Buell so bad, I figured I would try to sort it out later. Unfortunately due to other problems that probably won't happen, but I just wanted to share my experience with that place. His reasoning was, "I already took money off the MSRP so you have no reason to be upset about that chip in your wheel." My reasoning is, "I paid for a NEW bike in NEW condition, and you took money off the MSRP because it's last years models and you already have the newer/better ones in, not because of blemishes." |

DaveS, I didn't set the prices bro, I just tried to sell as many as possible, the set and freight for the HD's were $995.00 so there ya go...overall a good price is a good price regardless of where the discount is applied, it was an accounting show, cost out the bike then add full mark up on the freight, pdi, and doc fees to gain your profit from a different source because it made the accountant happy to do it that way...who knows why but it did I guess...well Good luck with your new business Dave. I bought a 06' XB12Ss last July. They wanted $10,500 + freight and setup = $11,495. I was able to get it for $10,000 even. Good luck with your purchase. Some sales guys are difficult to deal with and you will most likely have to walk away the first time. I was not able to shop around because I wanted it now and there was only one available between the two dealerships in my area. |

Yeah, I know it wasn't up to you. It's not up to me either. That is why customers need to look at the TOTAL price when shopping around. Lots of dealers try to "hide" the profit in strange ways and customers fall for it all the time. |

I almost feel a little ripped off now... I bought my 2007 XB12R this past December. My dealership (which I like to deal with) only charges $400 for freight and PDI. They were willing to take that off, but only if I didn't have a trade, which I did. I basically paid MSRP for the bike, plus a free 1000 mile service. However, they also did this for me: -Gave me a VERY fair price on my trade-in, especially considering it was kind of a specialty bike in December in Upstate New York. -They only took my bike as a down payment and essentially holding and storing the bike for me for free until I get my tax return to pay it off fully. -It was the only black and red 12R they had until at least May as all others will already spoken for (in fact, the one I bought was spoken for but the guy backed out after the bike arrived). They only have one other yellow 12R on the floor, and maybe 3 or 4 other Buells. I think it helps to deal with a large dealership. Mine is not very big when it comes to Buell, so they know they will sell everything they get in. I've never seen a leftover Buell on the floor there. I would say overall I was treated very fairly. I don't need an extended warranty - being in the car business, I know how much of a rip-off they are. 2 years is plenty, and you have until the end of those 2 years to buy the extra anyways if you really want it. Plus, I really appreciate the favor to me of storing the bike for free while I wait for the rest of my cash. I'll admit I'm not a good negotiator - when I bought my car, I didn't have to. I got the supplier discount from work, so I basically told the sales guy what I was paying and gave him a sheet of paper. And I didn't shop around - there are only 2 Buell dealerships in my area, and the other is even smaller than mine and they are total jerk offs there. Even if the price was better, I woudln't have bought it from them. (Message edited by xl1200r on February 07, 2007) |

Thank you all for the advice and helpful hints, I have a much MUCH better idea of how they will bend if they really want to sell a bike. With all of this in mind, would you guys consider it unreasonable to put down my foot at $7900 w/o freight and setup (Liquorwhere, thank you for your input, my number is loosely based off of your information), or is that just not feasable? (One of the reasons I was hoping to deal with Downtown HD was the fact that they dont charge the freight and setup. At least its what I was told by the salesman, Kris Bennett) Id like to get a decent deal, but I gotta watch out for my pocket book and what I can personally afford as well, ya know? Saber, Thanks for the tip as well. Ill be sure to be careful about the details like that. Was a little bummed to hear that about Eastside after they had established a good rep with me. Anyone in particular you feel that I should avoid dealing with for ease of sale? -Cale |

what daveS said about 4 posts above this one is so true...i don't charge a processing or doc fee (i am a car dealer) and i have customer that will buy the same vehicle for $100 less than mine and then pay a $350 processing fee (which actually means they paid 250 more than i asked) but they tell everyone how they got a bettter deal somewhere else...because they fall for other dealers gimmicks and tricks. i still believe that fairness and honesty is the best long term policy, but it sure hurts when the "tricks and games" dealers knock me out of a sale. |

Maddiemsu, From what Ive seen regarding pricing of the 12's around here, that seems to me like it would be a fair deal out the door, especially with the Micron. Anyone else more knowledgable want to chime in? |

You'll always find someone who'll sell a bike for X number of dollars cheaper - if you keep trying to chase that carrot, you'll never end up with a bike - or you'll always wonder if you could've done better. If you end up paying MSRP for a bike that makes you grin every time you ride it, it's still a helluva deal. |

try cycletrader.com, most of the dealers list their bikes there. In Florida, Ocala HD had the best deals and I bought mine there for $1000 below msrp. I never even went to their store until my 1000 service, they delivered the bike to my house for free, 95 miles south of Ocala. Today we have a New Buell Only dealer in Orlando, they had some nice prices on their bikes and claimed to match any deals when I was there for a open house last month. I will try them when it is time for another bike. Mitch |

Our last XB9R is gone to a good home. Only 2 XB12R's left. WE have ordered our last bikes and are on pace to sell out before summer hits. Looks like I might get a vacation this year if this strike continues. |
