Alright first things first.... Just put Jardine slip on on bonestock 04 xb12r. It finally got cold here and the bike did not want to start/idle correctly with the stock exhaust. The bike sat in the sun for 2 hours while changing the muffler. It then started and ran well as i pulled it back into the shed. Ahah! you would think. Put it was 45 degrees yesterday and the bike wouldn't start at lunchtime. It only ran briefly, would not idle without applying throttle. Then wouldn't restart after going thru this several times. It apparently ran rich (carbon deposits appeared around muffler connections, shed filled with gray smoke, strong odor of exhaust fumes) I understand cold air is denser...was it cold enough to call on the computer for more fuel. I know the lectures, but i just find it so hard to believe i need to fettle with the injection/ECM after a simple muffler swap. Stock headpipe remains, just a muffler swap. I've seen several threads pop up recently with cold weather starting/running issues. Is this the same deal? Is there anyone who swapped out for the jardine and made out fine without a reprogram? Help!!! new to buell by less than a month and i got hooked hard...i hope this is a simple fix. |

A muffler swap can make a dramatic change to how a bike runs. I wouldn't be to quick to dismiss its possible detrimental effects. But if you were experiencing the same issue prior to swapping mufflers, you must have a problem. Where you able to check the spark plugs or at least one of them immediately after trying but failing to get the engine started? |

No I wasn't (time constraints). I'll try to do that. what am i looking for wet plugs? I heard some complaints about intake seal leaks. isn't there a simple test for that? I'll try it if somebody can guide me. If it is the muffler swap causing the problem, do i need the tps reset? thanks |

Is your check engine light on? If your 12 is bone stock, I am assuming your ecm is also stock. The stock ecm uses the exhaust servo to control flow and may be causing some issues. Unless I am incorrect in this assumption, you will need to use a race ecm or a servo emulator to offset the servo's effect on the fuel system. Someone correct me if I am mistaken. |

Solved problem. Apparently the morning after the muffler was installed, it was just too cold to start and run properly (think 5 degrees) The plugs got soaked and then it wouldn't start regardless of how warm it was. new plugs are in, starts and idles fine....we'll see how the ecm handles the pipe on the street once i get some decent riding weather |

Lightning_Bug, I've replaced a stock muffler on a 12S with a race kit muffler without any issues, I just disconnected the servo from the ECM and it ran just fine. I only ran into problems when I swapped the ECM. Without a TPS reset after swapping ECMs your bike will run like crap. |
