I have an used '05 xb9r that pops/backfires when I delcelerate. The bike has stock ecm and air filter but has an aftermarket Jardine can. Is the popping a sign that its running to rich? I also noticed that when I bought the bike the header pipes were really blued up. When I start the bike in my basement the exhaust smells like raw gas. If it is running to rich would cutting up the airbox and getting more air into the the intake help? Thanks in advance for any help!} |

Too lean. Make sure that your clamp between the exhaust and header is flush where they meet and really cranked down. Mine had somewhat of the same issue and I noticed that my clamp holding the exhaust to the headers wasnt really flush, so i loosened it, adjusted it, made it flush, cranked it down and so far so good. Air was seeping in. Usually popping on decel means it's a lean issue. This happens when you let go of the throttle and it works it's way down in the RPM's right? M |

Yes after I get on it a little and let off the throttle it will pop as the rpms decrease. I'll take a look at the exhaust/header clamp! If it is running lean how can I adjust it? reset TPS? I would like to get a new ECM to make some more hp any recommendations? What works best with a Jardine pipe TFI or Buell Race ECM? |

Nuts, It's not necesarilly an issue of too lean. It's most often just unburned fuel being ignited inside of the exhaust tract. A leak at the header to cylinder-head connection can allow fresh air into the exhaust tract and thus exacerbate the popping on account of the excess fuel needs oxygen/air to ignite. I see what you're saying Blake... And I agree totally. All I did in the deduction phase was notice his bike is identical to mine... Notice he said it was STOCK except the Jardine pipe. To me, that means that the cans were exchanged and usually the number one issue with this is not a proper seal when reinstalling. So, yeah, it may not be actually RUNNING lean but you may be introducing excess air into the mix of things. All I can say, is that after I did my own install and had the TPS reset after installing it all myself, i did notice that my job on putting the clamp back on was.... uh, er a little shotty. Not too bad, but not PERFECT. I say, start with what's easy and the cheapest first. Then, if that doesn't work, all you've wasted is a little time. Hey Taulbert, check out my profile. Does my bike look familiar to you? |

I'll look at the cylinder to header and the header to exhaust connections. Nutsnbolts your bike looks sweet and oh so clean! I have changed my plastic from yellow to black and had my wheels powdered semigloss black it turned out really nice! Now I just need to figure out what color stickers to put on the intake cover. Thanks again! |

No stickers, leave them off! Much cleaner, leaner, meaner look. |
