My bike is a 2004 XB12S with 1,800 miles on the clock. Ok, I know this is a repeat, but I'm just wondering if anyone has come to a general agreement on the cause of hanging RPMs (around 2500) at throttle shut-off. It happens after being ridden for a little while. Sometimes it hangs, sometimes it doesn't. I also have the common backfires and sudden stalls for no aparent reason. Any suggestions are appreciated. |

I have heard of intake leaks causing weird hiccups. When you say "hanging" are you meaning that the RPMs drift downward rather than dropping back to idle speed? You wouldn't think that there would be intake leaks, but a bike that is 3 years old with 1,800 on the clock has probably sat somewhere for a significant amount of time. Dry rot maybe? Just a guess. I think someone suggested spraying WD-40 on the outside of the intake seals to see if it stalls the bike or interrupts the idle. I've never tried it. |

Thanks Ft_bstrd, The bike was purchased new in 2005 and is only ridden on weekends and/or nice days. The RPMs don't fall to idle quickly. They hang around 2200 rpms for a second or more, then fall off to idle. This usually only happens after the bike is a little hot from enthusiastic riding or being stuck in traffic. I don't remember it happening with the stock ECU. It has a stock air box with the factory "race" air filter, "race" ECU, and a Jardine can. I had the TPS reset also. I haven't tried the WD-40/break cleaner/propane test yet, but I might. For intake, do you mean around the air cleaner housing or throttle body cone? The seals look fine inside there. |

First manually adjust idle when the bike is hot.(10-15 min of good hard riding) 1050 is a good #. If thats not it then try the wd40(can leave a stain). If thats not it have the tps checked/reset. |

Ok, thanks Buelltroll. So, where should the WD40 spray be directed? |

Spray where the manifold meets each cylinder head. You can use propane from a torch, unlit of course. Idle speed will increase if propane is sucked in through a leak. Try not to get any in the air cleaner inlet. |

Thanks Justin, I'll give it a try. |
