Every time I would start my 06 Uly, (300 miles-just purchased)it would hesitate like the battery was weak. Very sluggish starting. Once I had ridden a few miles, it would start a little better, but not real strong. Several times it would reset the clock and trip meters when starting. PMd Dave Stueve and he suggested that the battery bolts might be a little too long. I was skeptical, but I put a washer on each bolt and the problem disappeared. For the first time the Uly fired up real strong and no resetting of the clock. Thanks again, Dave. |

OK, I admit I do not have an EE degree. How do too long bolts cause weak starting? Last month I found out the battery from my 06 Uly was already DEAD so I replaced it with an Odyssey PC 545MJ. This battery is so powerful it can be used to ignite the solid fuel booster to launch the space shuttle ( which then burns a million pounds of solid propellant in 90 seconds). |

The bolts being too long = not tightening properly thus loosen easier during normal operation. |

I think you will find that when the bolts are too long they bottom in their threaded holes before clamping the battery cable tightly against the battery terminal. The added washer suggested by Daves allows sufficient clamping force to occur before the bolts bottom. Dave |

I used the Odyssey (MJ) battery on my S3 and it wasn't anything special. Poor fit and it died after a few years. I'm not saying they're crap...just nothin' special to me. ...out to look at those battery bolts. |

Another cure for long bolts is to add electronic "farckles" to your bike! After adding heated grips, volt meter, aux lights, brake flasher, air horn relay, and battery tender tether my starting problems went away. The only problem now is the seat wont fasten but it starts up every time! |

Dave- Damn- they told me it could be used to supply power to the people on the same block as me if the electricity went out this winter! |

Javadog: Big fan of Odyssey batteries. How is the fit on yours? Does it attach like the original, or with a bolt and nut? |

The Odyssey has top terminals with SS bolts. It is wider but shorter than the original. I have not installed it yet as my bike's tail section is apart awaiting my less stiff rear shock to come back from Ed in Wisconsin(Trackside Engineering). |
