Hey guys, I recently picked up an 05 XB12S and learned a quick lesson . . . don't leave a big V-Twin idling in a slanted driveway! I left it idling to warm up and ran inside to grab the Vanson. I returned just in time to see the XB "walking" backward and starting to tip . . . I made it just in time to grab the left handlebar only to be pulled to the ground with it! It's a sad thing to be lying on your back next to your prostrate Buell . . . Damage was minimal (it half landed in the yard, throttle/brake lever stuck in the mud), but the right side foot peg was shattered.
Upon searching this board I learned this was a fairly common problem after tip overs. So I happily ordered a set of LSL Billet dropped footpegs from www.americansportbike.com (who provided excellent service). Upon installation of the LSL's I found something quite startling:
The left side footpeg was also cracked! Perhaps from a previous tip over? So my stupidity may have been a blessing in disguise. I would hate to be standing on my pegs when going over RR tracks or road construction only to have my footpeg fail! So check your pegs for fractures after purchasing a used bike or a tip over! Thanks to all on this board . . . I've enjoyed my time researching and getting to know you all! |

Happens everyday being a stunt rider.. those stock pegs are junk. but they break so that it does not lead to more problems. if the peg didn't break it would cause your rear sets to bend or break. I seen one that didn't break and it pushed the rear set into the chain. |

I subscribe to Sandman's logic. Last year, when I broke one of my stock pegs, I considered getting some billet pegs...but then, I thought, what happens if the bike were to drop and the peg didn't break? All that force would be applied directly to the peg hanger... |

That's a very good point. However, I'd rather the bike get damaged in a tip over than my body get damaged in the event of peg failure while riding (however remote the possibility). |

And if I am watching a sliding bike chasing me towards a guard rail preparing to do a nice loop on top of me, I want all the pointy bits broken sooner rather then later. Or at least significantly shortened |

I like that they break away and agree with Sandman and Reepicheep. Because they break so easy, I do keep a set of R model pegs under my Ss seat along with a set of needle nose pliers to change them out with. |

what? you want the foot pegs to break? they break because they're cheap! this is not a design feature to keep you safe.... |

Why else would there be "holes" in the center of the pegs? To cut weight? <- I doubt it |

what? you want the foot pegs to break? they break because they're cheap! this is not a design feature to keep you safe.... Yes, I want them to break, in the event of a tipover or crash. Not necessarily to keep me safe, but rather to prevent damage to other parts of the bike (which would be more difficult, and expensive, to change out). As for breaking the pegs while riding, well I doubt I will--I'm not all that heavy, and I generally keep both wheels on the road. I figure the same engineers who designed the rest of my Buell spec'd the pegs, and since I'm trusting their design on everything else, I'll trust them on their selection of footpegs. Yes, I did break a peg last year...not even a tipover, but while moving the bike in the garage. Caught something while moving the bike back, and the peg snapped. Something had to give--I'm sure glad it was the peg, and not the peg hanger! |

I also opted for the 1" billet drop mounts and LSL pegs from American Sport Bike. Very nice pieces, and they are spring-loaded just like the stockers to fold up in the event of a tip-over/crash/agressive lean angle . I don't really see any extra stress being put on the hangers due to different pegs, unless they are rigid mounted to the hangers. my $.02 Tank |

I never had any problem with the stock pegs, but jon was selling them for a great price |

I do find it interesting that Honda riders trust Buell pegs enough to install them...I've run across this question on other forums, from owners of a number of bike brands. As far as the spring-loaded pivot, yes they do fold away and one would hope that would save them. However, I know of instances (other than Sshbiker's) where a simple tipover will break the peg--if the bike isn't moving forward when it tips, the peg can end up carrying the entire weight of the bike. The pegs pivot not to protect the pegs during a crash, but so that if the peg touches down while cornering it simply folds up a bit (and gives the rider a tactile warning about lean angle) rather than breaking or, worse, levering the tires off the pavement. Don't get me wrong, I quite like billet pegs like the LSLs, it's just that I don't think there's really any benefit beyond looks, unless you're either quite large or stressing the pegs by stunting--in which case you should be aware that, by strengthening one part, you may be stressing another part more. Bottom Line: The stock pegs suck. Am I right my brothers? I can reveal now that they were designed by LSL for the sole purpose of creating a demand for their billet footpegs. I know. I bought a pair myself.

One of the easiest mods done to my '06 Long was a set of Crossroads Performance competition foot pegs. Off with the cheesy looking stock pegs. These things have a nasty looking cleat surface that I'd love to have on my dirt bike! If your boot slips off these babies, your doing something you probably shouldn't. And yes, they're also spring loaded. |

I can buy 4 pair retail for a hundred bucks.. Also on ebay pick I can pick them up on the cheap... If you brake 8 pegs well maybe you should go another route.. As for me stock are the easiest to obtain, replace and are the most economical choice. |

On 2 out of 3 Buells I have had (One was an X-1 so it didn't the same pegs) the only time I had a peg break was when my bike fell over. Yeah, it's fallen over a few times. Firebolt- Kickstand broke, peg broke Lightning Long- First day I had it, wife backed into it. Went to a dragstrip, 12 O'clock (No, not time of day)peg broke 7,000 miles on Firebolt..11,600 miles on Lightning Long |

The stock Buell footpegs cost 4 times more than CNC machined billet aluminum anodized footpegs

Definitely more... but not 4x! I think like 1.6x more |

Two CNC machined aftermarket footpegs are $175 (or one is $83) and one OEM footpeg is $290 (or two is $580). Which is about 4 times more for OEM footpegs than for better quality aftermarket footpegs. |
