can you guys tell me all there is to know about these? im looking to buy one, its an 01 guy says its carbd, thought they ditched the carbs in 98, i know my 99 s3 is DDFI anything to look for? hp/tq? weight? please tell me all you can about these, good and bad thanks in advance |

The O1's should be pretty well sorted (updated tensioner shoe, Y-bracket, the reservoir shock) but keep your eye on the oil pump drive gear. Less peak hp than an X1 but more midrange torque. Never had my bike on the scales, but I suspect it's about 475lbs gassed up. The bad: The pegs drag like a mofo. Peg relocators help, but you still have to watch your toes. If it's an M2L you're talking about, the peg dragging problem is going to be worse. The seat retaining screw won't stay tight - it can loosen while you ride. If you like to stand up every now and then to stretch your legs, make sure the seat doesn't fly off on the highway. The bike comes jetted ridiculously lean from the factory. Even if you leave the bike totally stock, rejet the carb. The fork spring rate is too soft for a rider over 160 lbs. You won't be able to dial in the proper sag even with the preload adjusters maxed out. Some people say the stock seat isn't comfortable. I never had a problem with it, but on hot days, the seat lets a lot of engine heat get to your nether regions. No storage area, except for the little space in the tail. Whatever you put in there will have to share space with the wiring for the tail light and signals. That's about it for the bad- not too bad, really. |

All M2s are carbed. I've got an 01, and most of the bugs were worked out by then. I don't think there were any recalls for 2001. My only failures (after 23k miles) have been the rocker cover gaskets, speedo sensor, and a stator. The manual lists the weight at 480 wet, and hp at 91. That's at the crank. Mine, with just a V&H, "race" air cleaner, and rejetting measured 82 hp at the rear wheel. Nice fat power band - not as much top end as an X1, but more grunt down low due to different cams. It's a fantastic bike - let me know if you need any other information! |
