This may sound like a stupid question to some of you, but kinda new here. I've seen tons of pics of xb12s with the rear fender eliminated. I LOVE THAT LOOK! How and where do I find those kits?? Thanks...

Draw, mark, mesasure 10 times, cut once. I'm going to do it myself, most do. ;)

IMHO you might want to see one in real life before you do it. It looks great in pictures but in reality I personally prefer the stock. Plus the effect is enhanced by removing passenger footpeg brackets but I think they can provide some protection to major components in the event of a crash or drop.

Just my $0.87 X 2 (today's Cdn exchange rate)

Why not just remove it all together? You are talking the fender and not the cheese gator?

I love the look of the removed fender. Have had much positive feedback. I think, it looks more sport bike but some folks more readily see the HD heritage with the rear wheel more exposed. I did it myself, time consuming but not hard. Remove the cheese-grater. Saber saw the extended part. Vixon File. Vertical belt sanded with 80 grit. Then progressively fine hand sanding and polishing. Installed the integrated LED tail light from American Sport Bike. That removed the turn signals. The Tail-light also has a integrated license plate light. To use it, additional cutting is required. The license plate holder is the rear reflector tine bent at the top. It runs under the stock holder. Drilled a couple of holes forward of the light, installed bolts and self locking nuts, then used at piece of aluminum bar stock as a cross-member behind the plate. Wiring was all plug and play. Honestly it's pretty straightforward. One of the sponsors does the same hacking for about a hundred bucks. That's probably reasonable. I just wanted to do it myself.

Lighninginthesky - Thank you that's exactly the look I'm going for! It's gonna be a while here in upstate NY before I get it done and ride it. But once done I'll post pics. Thanks again!

BTW..the bike's hot! I was gonna go with the bar end mirror myself. Just the left side though...

Don't you mean just the right side? Surely you're not planning on being in the slow lane!?

So.... this is my first post here :-)

I'm so proud of this chopped tail version that I cannot avoid to post

start from an original "pasta strainer" ... (i'm Italian, I prefer this definition to the cheese grater one)

buy a new rear light (here compared with the original plate light)

cut it and prepare a slot for the rear light:

join together the cuts with some tool and fix the light with tape (wrapping it with some film to protect against polyester filler) and realized its center with some polyester filler

starting with the fiberglass..
begin with tape on external and fiberglass from the internal, when ready, remove the tape and add fiberglass from external too
guess I've used 6 layers of fiberglass

you'll get something similar:

then you should prepare the slots for the blinkers, if them you want to mount on the tail
again polyester filler and an appropriate tool of high technology..(a long screw with dices and washers in and out):

identify all the areas requiring filler or sanding

than you can start...

1) filler, paper sanding, filler, paper sanding...
2) primer, paper sanding, primer, paper sanding...

remember to avoid the contact with the fiberglass powder... protect your breathing and skin
paint it as you prefer and protect it with some transparent paint

Ready!

I've also the plate... even here in Italy (believe it or not) is not legal to drive without,
but I've a personal version that is connected directly with the swingarm

sorry for my bad English and have fun chopping..; )
ciao
