Well I finally got my hands on a 97 S1 with 6700 miles. Im in ohio and its pretty cold but that hasnt stopped me from joyriding. Im trying to get used to the bike and learn its mannerisms. One thing that has me wondering is the cold startup procedure. For temps 50F and under the manual says to pull enrichener out and let warm up 15-30 seconds and ride with it fully out for 5 minutes or 3 miles. Then your supposed to push it in half way for another 2 minutes or 2 miles. Well I hanvt been following the procedure to the letter. I pull the enrichener out all the way at startup. Then let it warm up for about 2 minutes and then push it in half way and drive off. Then after a couple more minutes I push it in. Im finding that sometimes at deceleration it backfires ever so slightly. At least it sounds like a backfire but isnt that loud. I cant tell if its normal or not. Im riding in 30F degree weather and this is my first streetbike so I just want to make sure Im doing the warm up right. Im hesitant to drive off with the enrichener fully open for fear of fouling a plug. Also, this bike has a supertrapp muffler and the carb has been rejetted to suite. |

J, Congrats on finding a S1. As for using the enricher, something you need to see just what your engine likes. As for me, I normally use full on to start a cold motor and slowly back it off. Backing it off while maintaining about 1k on the tach. Normally full off before I roll. As you back it off it will tell you whats going on. Keeping a steady rpm as you take it off the enricher until it settles in at your normal idle. (Message edited by loki on December 09, 2006) |

Hey Johnny: Enjoy your bike! I'm not to far from you, I live in Blue Ash. I like to get my bikes off the enrichner as early as they will accept it. You will know if you pushed it in to far to early because the bike will cough or sputter. Mark |

congrats on the bike also, i'm sure you'll have a ton of fun with it. the one thing i learned early with my cyclone is pull it out just long enough to start it then push it back in so you can throttle it until it's warmed up, not going over (some people say 2000 and other people say 1500) until it is up to temp. i've seen what my pistons from leaving the choke out to warm up the bike. totally carboned up on top. as far as lebanon goes it's a pretty area, my aunt lives there but the people in the cages are crazy up there. my mom and and one brother live in pickerington, right around the corner from the AMA museum.anyhow, good luck and be safe up there |

I don't use the enrichener at all. Fouled out far too many plugs. Install an idle whip and crank it before you start the engine. Let it run for a minute or two then back it off. You will need to adjust it a little more after it has run for 5-10 minutes (usually at the first or second stop light). I haven't fould a plug since. |

Booky, yes blueash isnt that far. I do think maybe Im pushing the enrichener in too soon because of I get a cough or sputter early on. Nevrenuf, its a small world after all! I really like Lebanon. I dont even notice the prison though and cant say it bothers me. On another note, what do you guys think about AVON tires? I need some new ones. Was thinking of AVON or Pirelli Diablo Corsa III. Id be willing to sacrifce some grip for extended life. I dont have the marbles yet to really lean into the turns. |

use the enricher as little as possible, i rely on the throttle to keep the bike running until up to temperature. one thing to keep in mind, if you do much cold weather riding, is that the cylinder base gaskets have a tendency of weeping slightly until the engine temperature stabilizes, i noticed this on my S1's when the temperature was around 32 degrees or colder. I did a little riding today. Didnt have much of a problem with sputtering and it went away after a couple miles of riding. I did have the bike completely stall out on me on my way home. I pulled over and checked the gas. Put it on reserve and she started right up. So far Ive put 54 miles on her since getting my temps on friday. Im really starting to get more comfortable with the bike. I still cant take turns with confidence and my hands cramp a little. Temps have been in the 35-45F range this weekend. I think the temps are keeping me from really getting a feel for the bike since its so cold. I cant wait till this spring! |

Cold temperatures = cold asphalt = cold tires = less grip/traction. Jest take it easy on them thar corners till the temps warm up a bit. Oh yea by the way good luck, congratz, enjoy your Buell American motorcycle. |

Ive been keeping that in mind Danny as well as the salt on the road. Im riding very conservatively and in all honesty putting around is fun enough for me right now. |

Nothing major. I need some new tires and Id really like a set of gold/orange anodized aluminum rims like the newer XB's but the aftermarket PM rims that came on it are pretty nice. Id also like to get the pipes ceramic coated. |

Ahh, the gold should look good! I'm considering having my pm's powder coated black, think it would look good with the black body-work. That and a coil-over shock to replace the thermos bottle looking recall shock! Keep us posted! |

You bought the only 10 year old motorcycle that'll still turn heads when you come riding up. Love them or hate them... everyone looks. |
