Hey guys. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving holiday. I know I did. It was fairly warm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and I rode my bike (2007 XB12Scg) most of those days. I loved it and had a ton of fun. I did encounter a problem, though. When downshifting, I'd blip the throttle to match the revs with road speed and a bunch of times when I did this it would "pop" seemingly backfiring through the intake. When it did this it seemed to want to shut off and in fact it did shut off while doing this on one occasion. Obviously, I'm not too happy about this and I'm wondering if you guys know what the problem is. It didn't seem to matter if the engine was warm or cold or whether or not the fuel tank was low or full. The bike is 100% stock and only has about 320 miles on it. Also, what is the black cover, circular in shape, on the left side of the engine, just above the rubber tip on the shift lever? |

OK I found what the black cover is for in the owners manual. I should have looked before asking. But what about my other question? |

the popping is hard to diagnose without having seen it or knowing what your shifting technique is. Are you trying to blip the throttle and downshift without the clutch? If so these bikes have a lot of inertia in the crank and do not "blip" well in stock form. I'd recommend using a bit more clutch, or just giving the motor a little more time to spin up before shifting. That is just a guess based on the assumption that this is your first Buell and that your previous bikes were faster revving IL4 types. I am not trying to "talk smack" in any way. Just trying to help |

This is my first street bike. There were no inline 4s in my past. I'm downshifting with the clutch and blipping the throttle just before I let the clutch out to smooth the downshift. The backfiring is occuring when I blip the throttle just before letting the clutch out. |

have you tried braking then downshifting with no gas? if it pops then you know it's getting too much gas. the f i bikes are a lot different than the carb'd (bikes) however, so i could be wrong. have you tried any other methods? |

If I pull in the clutch and brake to a stop, it doesn't backfire. On Buelletin Board, some guy said that his 07 Lightning had the same problem and he ended up having his throttle body replaced. He said that he was also told it was a widespread problem. How many other people are having problems with backfiring on their 07 Buells? |
