My new (500 miles) Ulysses has a funny shifting problem. When the ambient temperature is low the bike won't shift out of second gear until it gets a little warm. When attempting to shift into 3rd there is not resistance on the lever, feels like something spring loaded didn't return due to a close clearance or cold oil. With the stock primary oil it would take a mile or so before it would work properly. I put in some Royal Purple and it's much better, just takes a couple of blocks. Also loosened the primary a smidge with no results. The transmission works great when it's warmed up but this is annoying. If nothing else I'll mention it to the dealer at 1,000 miles. Maybe it will loosen up. Anybody else seen this? |

Sounds like the cold weather may be revealing a slight misadjustment in your clutch or lubricant level. Try double checking the tranny fluid level and ensure that it is just barely touching the clutch spring plate. Even just an extra ounce or two of lubricant can cause the symptoms you describe. Also check/adjust your clutch cable, which after the first 500 miles ov cable wearing-in will usually need the lever free-play reduced. What grade of Royal Purple lubricant did you use and how much did you add when changing the transmission/primary oil? |

I used 75W80 gear oil. Wasn't real meticulous about the level. I used an entire quart and, as I recall, it came about half way up the teeth on the clutch plate. |

There's a likely source of your issue. Try removing enough lubricant so the teeth are just barely touching the lubricant surface and you'll be a most happy Buell rider again. |
