I test rode a new S1 back in 97 and it had me in a huge whille just by cranking the throttle to MOVE. It almost killed me I swear. My X1 didnt act like that at 955 miles unless off a slight hill. I dont know. previous owner for sure damaged the O2 sensor with very high octane gas. My x1 pulls nice but just wondering if there was a huge diff. Of course the FI is a big one. |

The main difference that I am aware of, is the S1, has Lightning Heads, while the X1/S3 has the Thunderstorm heads. Not sure on the hp difference... I think there might be a difference in cams.. but dont hold me to that. Chase |

Low air pressure in the rear tire will make easier wheelies. You may have been running a flat tire since an X1 should eat a S1 power wise. |

Mmmi_grad My 96 S1 had the lightning motor in it and my 99 has the thunderbolt. The lightning motor makes power off idle where as the thunderbolt doesn't seem to start making power for another five to seven hundred rpm. Thats my experience with these two stock motors. I think it's the heads and cams that make the difference. Thought the thunderbolt motor makes more power the lightning is a better motor for sport touring. |

Um, from what I understand, the 1996 S1 had a stock sportster motor in it like the S2's. They went with the lightning heads in '97, and then to the thunderstorm heads in '98. Info taken from here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=3842&post=54544#POST54544 |
