what is the life on fork seals blew mine out today. kinda wondering if there eas some thing wrong with them or it they were just old. | ||

Had an S3 Right side that went out about 25,000. Right sides weep more than the left. Be sure to check and wipe down the dist before each ride. Dust on the fork tube takes them out faster than anything else I can figure. (Message edited by 89rs1200 on October 09, 2006) | ||

On another thread, someone posted a trick: Take a tearoff or some other piece of very thin plasic. Cut a shallow hook into it and insert the tool up between the slider and the seal. The idea is to pull out any dust or other crap that might be in there. | ||

You can pull down the dust cover and clean up under the seal. I found that insects would be the cause of frequent fork seal leaks, so I wipe down the "male" forks with silicone spray and pull down the dust cover monthly during "insect season". I haven't had a blown fork seal in 20,000 miles since I started this procedure. | ||

If you leave the bike sitting for months the fork seals can go hard and perish. My 98 S3 had very low miles from the previous owner, which contributed to the right side leaking. | ||

Ditto on that. Exact same bike and situation as mine. My advice, make it a habit of wiping the tubes down before riding and at gas stops, etc. You know...bugs! |
