This is my first post in here so here goes: I'm looking to get a Buell for the wife and I to ride, both solo and two up, and I would like to get some input as to what to look for, what to stay away from, problem areas, etc. I rode a '06 XB9R and I'm about hooked... Thanks. | ||

You oughta get your legs around a Uly. The xb9r is great, but you say two up and I think semi long rides. That is not the ride of choice for long rides, in my opinion. I have an xb9r and I'm 6'3". It's great! Don't get me wrong.. It's just that it kinda bogs down 2 up, and is not the best 2 up bike. I do it, but I don't have a choice at this time. I got on a Uly bout a month ago and I about drooled all over it. I sat on it and I couldn't believe it. A bike built for someone tall. Oh, on that note, they do make the 12Ss. Which is built for room. Suspension is beefier and Bit longer wheelbase. Really comfy. You'll just have to take a few out and see what you think. Can't just sit on it. Scott, Welcome to Badweb. I assume your wife is going to be a passenger and you aren't looking for something for her to ride herself? Try a Uly if you're tall enough. It is fantastic for 2 up. It doesn't handle as well as a 9R, but still it's very good. | ||

I ride 2 up with my 13 year old(140 lbs 5-11)son on my firebolt. My motor isn't stock so I can't comment there. For 2-3 hour rides on an "r" it can become tiring if the passenger lays on you and you end up supporting their weight on your arms. The Uly, and Ss have a more up-right ergo and are better for more extended riding 2-up. If solo is the primary use of the bike with occassional 2-up go for the "r". If you want to ride 2-up a lot go for the SS or Ulysses. For touring the Ulysses is the very best option. The Ulysses is not the best bike for around town because of the high seat. It can be hard to stop and leave from stops smoothly if you are not >6ft tall. | ||

Hey Scott, Welcome. I'd have to second Diablo and say for two up go with the Ss. Uly is gonna lose a bit on the street, but if you want to trail-ride at all, it's the only way to go. The Ss has bigger fuel cap., bigger seat and softer(gel), and just a little roomier all around. (Shameless plug)My 06 Ss is for sale as we speak. Ton of money and custom work. Thanks for the welcome ! I currently have a '03 Kawi Z1000, that's low miles and has some suspension upgrades( ZX6R forks, radial brakes ad rear shock ), pilot powers, muzzy pipe & PCIII so it's a ball to ride. It's a little buzzy on the interstate, so I rode the 'bolt on I-10 to get an idea as to how good of a commuter it would be. I really like street fighters, so the Lightning Ss appeals to me. Someone didn't like the SX, other than the small engine, is there something else to cause the bias ? I didn't like the hand guards and some of the moto-x type stuff, but it's nothing a socket set, axe, plasma cutter etc. won't remove. I looked at the Uly, and it's too enduro / motard for me. Thanks for the "For Sale" links guys I'll give them consideration. I am looking at a little older models, as this may end up as the wifes bike, so if it gets scratched I don't want to be too upset. | ||

Haven't heard many CityX riders that don't like them. I know I'm having a great time with mine this first Summer of ownership. I've ridden the 12's too, but at this point the 9 is fine. | ||

didn't like the hand guards We all made fun of Buell when the CityX came out with those hand guards. Then winter came and we found out they were great in the cold. Don't cut them off until after you've ridden around in Feb.  You asked about complaints about the CityX. Most people I know with the bike like it. I wouldn't mind having one. Not sure how it would be for 2 up though. | ||

I really like my 9R, and have it set up so I can take it touring. 2up is definately not comfy for the passenger, maybe better with the touring pillion. | ||

Can you ride 2-up on the other models? Yep. After a long day'd ride, will your passenger curse the day you and they were ever born? Yep. Right tool for the right job. Ride the Uly before you put it out to pasture. You might just find that it fits you (and more importantly your passenger) better than you think. | ||

Right now, we are doing about 1/2 hour rides, etc., so it's not long distance touring. She isn't complaining about the seat as much as the long distance from the seat to the tank to brace herself during braking. She has been supporting herself on the tank to keep her weight off of me and my wrists. I guess no one likes my Zed...   | ||

Love my City X. Riding with passenger is when things get a little tight. But if your passenger is a cute female you don't mind. And the hand guards are easy to take off if your don't like them. But I find they keep the wind off your hands on the cold days. | ||

2-up the Uly is definitely the way to go. I'm also going to have to disagree with Diablobrian on it not being the best for around town. I'm 5'8" (on a good day) with a 29" inseam and other than being careful at stops on way off-camber roads I've got no issues. I've got the low seat so that helps. I commute on it almost every day and the seat height is an advantage to me in traffic - I can see over all of the cars and look through the rear and front windows of SUVs to see the traffic ahead. The really cool thing about the bike is that it is so well balanced that I can come to a complete stop at stop signs and never put a foot down before proceeding. The one down side I will point out is that I think 1st gear is too tall for stop and go traffic and parade duty. I may fix that this winter with the XB9 primary. | ||

SS - that is why I went with it - more comfortable ergo's, more seat room for a passenger, but still VERY sporty - the Uly is too Motard looking for me too. |
