There are only so many Buells, and even fewer with chain drives, so odds are in your favor.

Its probably a racer anyways looks like they never installed a 02 sensor on the rear pipe plus the other gear etc.

That is the chain conversion on ebay right now, same colored frame of the bikes in the description they have for the conversion.

Ok here is a question about the front sprocket, I call my local HD shop and ask them what the cost is of a front sprocket for a 91 to 92 sportster and they quote $104.00 before adding shipping. What gives with the cheap front sprocket prices. I just ordered one from JP cycles for $40 and now I have to get a spacer made up because the spline width on the motor is too wide for the sprocket.

Do we need to order an offset sprocket for this conversion?

in my opinion the home brew is not the best method (been there done that)

with all the different options(kits) now, you can get tested/race proven kits for as low as 450

just my opinion

Hey Ronlv, can you source the parts from freespirits for just a front sprocket? What would be the cost? I would hope one could get replacements for when they wear out.

yes you can get replacement parts

the problem is not getting the parts, its the cost of bringing one little part to the states (its not cost effective)

if i knew that i needed one little part when i placed a regular order it would be much better(less expensive) to bring over

sometimes we have extra parts from kits we used to make up our 240 kit

someone asked this question on ebay and the seller(grandstand designs)said 525 just for the idler, we do not sell this product, i was just telling everyone all the options that i know of

the kit we have is the freespirits but with one rear sprocket (so it is less expensive)

freespirits takes a 520 chain, thats all thats needed on these bikes, anything more is over kill and robs you of power

When I got my parts from Saintly the front spocket allready had the .120 shim installed by him.The worst part of the conversion was having to buy 1 and 3/4 scocket to remove front pully

This kit is clean, complete and easy to install. Well worth the $$. Probably the best kit available. I have installed two of them.

Thansesxb9rs, The front pulley provided in the kit is custom made,and spaced appropriately for the application and requires no additional spacer. Again, its a well thought out and completely bolt-on kit.

Interesting, like I said before, for those better off tan myself that don't like the
challenge of engineering it yourself it could be a good option.

The kit is a steel and pete raced it all year and had not one problem with it p.s. it looks real sweet on the bike too. also its a 520 chain

here is another thought then

How many chains have broken (if any) on a Buell chain conversion????

I imagine if a chain broke o a buell there could be a lot of damaged parts near the front sprocket

I have never heard of a chain breaking on a converted XB.

Even on the track.

Like most motorcycles there is potential for damage with a broken chain.

The worst of it on an XB might be the electrical connectors, or oil pump, but once again it hasn't come up AFIK.

hammer71 broke a chain. little to no damage and he was running roughly 80mph at the time. think he lost part of his seat cover though: )

Yikes! That's too close for comfort!

I take it he had no chain (belt) guard in place?

I have one of the "carbon fiber" rear hugger/chain guards on mine for
scary moments like that one.

There might be a market in billet ones that someone could exploit as well.
Drill them to match the pattern of the heel guards, or slot them and make
them mount in stock locations and you are golden.

Then again, a belt could tear a seat cover nearly as easily under power.

Was there any warning before chain failure?
wear, stretch, missing master link clip?

Cause of failure (if it was able to be determined?

I'm really interested in finding out about this.

We lost a chain in one race this year. The chain didn't break but was 'spat' off the sprocket when one of the sprocket bolts worked loose (despite copious loctite!) and hit the swingarm!! This dislodged the chain at around 100mph.
Other than a few scrapes to the swingarm there was no damage (although the front sprocket cover broke when Phil kicked it in the paddock afterwards : ) )

it wasn't the chain that took out the seat cover. it was inhaled through a sudden tightening of the sphincter;)
