Woooo Hooooo!!! just got my shiny new Jardine exhaust in....now I have a really stupid question....the bolts that hold the rear support strap appear to be allen head up inside the frame....can someone please tell me what size allen they are before I remove them with a torch??? Just kidding..i wouldn't do that...I would like to know who the waterhead is that came up with THAT design...it would have been soooo easy to use T-bolts so the nuts could be removed without having to jam your hands between the frame and muffler...ripping meat from the hands...GRRRRRR!!!! |

It's medium! Mine's been gone for years, so I have no idea. I'm thinking 7/32, but I'm going by old memories. |

I'm a real dipstick sometimes...I got it figured out...the service manual should begin with "remove the drive sprocket cover" Once the cover is out of the way, you can easily get to the bolts...which use a 1/4" allen wrench by the way. Oh well I guess a Buell only mechanic would have issues working on a old KZ-1000 Kawi...LOL I am a old fart with extremely sun damaged skin on my hands...if I have to jam my hands into a tight space...the bruising is unbelievable. Exhaust is on...I'm THUMPIN' NOW! Now it's carb tweakin' time..it has a bad flat spot off idle now.... (Message edited by fast1075 on May 08, 2008) |

Shimming & jetting will help a world - you did install using the stock lower front hardware - yes? EZ |

Off idle would be the slow jet. |

Yes I did use the stock front hardware...the install was straight forward..It might have an exhaust leak in spite of the new exhaust gasket..I was late thirty working on it...It does sound better...it has the QMI. |

Think I should enlarge the slide bleed to 1/8" while I have the carb top off??? I will be accessing the low speed mixture adjustment tonight...and I have a pile of various shims for the slide needle...If Lectron carbs only had an idle circuit ..I have a 42mm sitting on the shelf. |

No discernible difference in enlarging the slide - works for twins though, shim the needle to .05 - or 2 #6 brass machine washers - which is close. 45/175 would probably work well with the silencer insert - without - I'd try 48/180. EZ (Message edited by ezblast on May 26, 2008) |

Just finished the "EZ carb mods".. With the stock exhaust I never realized how bad the off idle flat spot was...shimmed, jetted and adjusted...the difference is night and day...seamless carburation with no hint of a flat spot..going for a nice ride now report later.. |

Back from the ride...The pipe is loud, but not too bad...the lawnmower sound is gone..replaced with a satisfying THUMP! There is a difference in the power..it seems to have lost a bit of off idle torque and gained in the midrange...it runs better...pulls stronger out of the corner than it did...80mph is easy..and the "farting" during deceleration that the stock pipe had is gone..it is more responsive to throttle...and I didn't get in the way of my buddy on his ZX-10 in the corners... The mutation continues...... |

You might want to try a 48 slow jet to see if it helps off idle. |

When I installed the pipe...the off idle lean spot was so bad it would pop back thru the carb when you eased the throttle on...the Buell shop didn't have the pilot jet in stock and the counter guy at the local Honda shop couldn't get past the fact that the jet was going into a Buell...I know honda stocks keihin jets (or used to when I worked for them)...but I dont know what model uses a 48 and he would not drag out the jet box to look at them...OK it WAS real busy. With the pilot needle set at 2.5 turns and the slide needle shimmed .051 the carburation feels great..I will buy a couple of new plugs and do WOT readings to see how the main looks. There is no surging, detonation or other symptoms of running lean...I am very pleased with the performance. I have literally a 3 pound box of jets but they are for Mikuni VM and flat slide carbs. |

Just tell the Honda guys that if a carb'd CB2000 had ever been produced, then they wouldn't think the Blast jetting was so unusual! |

I think the jets in the Keihin 2 stroke carbs are in that range...but memory dims.. |

Jetting with the Jardine, quiet core and K&N filter is great at 48/175 with 2 #6 washers. There is a dyno of that in the dyno page. A Jardine question: Do you guys drag it on the ground and bottom out a lot with it? Mine is almost worn through in 400 miles and the top of the muffler can is tight to the bottom of the bike. Old shock needs shimming - use a 1/3" sch.80 piece of pvc - have a shop do it unless you nave the right tool. Shop cost was 25.00 in SF. EZ |

Lucky, I haven't dragged mine yet...but I only weigh 145 pounds...I will say I am VERY careful to go around speed humps. |

Thanks EZ, I think the can is too far gone already and I will just scrape the rust off the stocker and go back to it. Besides, I am really tired of working on this bike and don't really want a suspension project, too. Overall, I have pretty much given up on the Blast ever working well and am saving money for a new supermoto. (Yamaha WR250X) 1075, Maybe the roads in Florida are smoother than up here with frost, lots of snow and really steep hills. It is not uncommon to have 3-4" tall humps from the frost moving the road beds. Avoiding all the bumps would entail riding in circles in the garage. Paul |

LOL - that exhaust is no lower to the ground than a Tuber - so I'd suggest dodging bumps. EZ |

I gave up on a few vehicles in my past. One was a 1976 Charger. Another was a 1968 Galaxy 500. The last was a 1987 Horizon. I look back and regret them all. The charger was in good shape, but had issues. I was worried about dependable driving. The Galaxy was in excellent shape, but all sorts of things got in the way. I should have just put it into storage until I had more time. The Horizon had electrical issues, but averaged 36MPG. I also tended to race cars I had no business racing. It was just street racing when the light turns green, but I was actually beating most of them! |

The last bike I built (before my P-3) started out as a complete 1976 Kawasaki KZ1000....by the time I was done with it, it would run 8.20s in Top Gas....there was VERY LITTLE of the original bike left when I got done... Product improvement ROCKS!!! |

Reuel, Do you regret buying them in the first place, or selling them? I've only ever owned 1.5 car (the Prius is only half mine) and 3 motorcycles in 25 years of driving. The Buell is the first one that didn't just run and run. EZ, The can is pretty much too far gone already as the rivets are pulling through. It looks like painting up the rusty stock muffler/skid plate and going back to that. Paul |

I regret getting rid of them. My Blast is my first ever New vehicle. It's been the most reliable, too, despite what I do to it. Of course, that's hard to compare, since I put 130K miles on that old Horizon, and only 32K on my Blast. |

Hey, thought I'd bring this back over here from the modified stock page. Here is a picture of a Jardine after the rail road tracks. The header is fine, except for the crappy ceramic spray paint job. My advice is to use the primer for that first. The can is a little wavier than it looks in the photo. The can was dragging along in the loop holder for about a block before I could get out of traffic and off the road. The stock exhaust gives 3.25" clearance with just the bike and 2.9" with me on it. The Jardine was about half an inch less in both cases. Paul

EZ, I think it is time to just try to get it to run a couple hundred miles and contain the oil coming out of the PCV vent to keep it from spitting all over the bike and rear wheel. There are literally drops of oil running down the engine and dripping off the oil filter, air filter and belt guard after a ride. Gooped around the elbow with liquid gasket yesterday, will try it out today and see if it worked. Paul |
